While the market in Pointe a Pitre is more devoted to tourists, the one in Basse Terre is smaller and should be more "authentic". (But I cannot say if it is true or not)...
There is a separate part for fruit stalls and in front of the sea you have stalls for fishermen. And of course you have the "tourist" part with souvenirs, spices and all varieties of punch.
What to buy: Assortment of spices - either to make a Colombo or flavour other dishes.
Punch - from whatever fruit grows on the islands, with rhum added.
And Madras - the colourful tissues (something like scottish tissue with colors) - either as children dresses or nice dolls.

The markets are really great. You can't buy everything, but in a small market along the road in St Anne, there was lots of food, spices, really cool, tshirts, and some craft (nothing that special). Pretty cheap!
What to buy: Get Guadeloupe T-shirts for all your loved-ones, and some delicious, good looking-and-smelling spices.
What to pay: Not much, and this is great, you can pay everything, and I mean it, with euros (being Guadeloupe a french "colony")
