The people of San Juan Comalapa have chronicled their history and suffering in mural paintings on the cemetery walls at the entrance of their city. My wife's mother perished in the earthquake here in 1976, so there are sections of the murals that were really emotionally touching to us.

Comalapa is very famous for it´s naif art, there are a lot of art galleries of this type of painting, and some of the painters like Andres Curruchiche are local celebrities. Here a nice painting of Comalapa´s church celebration by Omar Bal.

This church located at the main plaza, is a beautiful example of the colonial architecture with indian touch, the church was badly damaged during the 1974´s earthquake, and is closed waiting for a restoration, a new church with no interest was built beside the cathedral.

Most of the town of Comalapa was destroyed during the 1974´s earthquake, so a lot of the beautiful adobe construction disappeared, but is a nice town to visit, has character (most of the town walls have paintings) , and the women wears beautiful Kaqchiquel clothes.
