This beautiful church located in the Parque Central (Main Plaza) is a colonial church now under restoration (so it´s closed). The Patzun area was part of the Ix¡mché Kingdom, but in 1540 the Franciscans arrived and started to built the church. They also brought the image of St Bernardino the patron saint of town. I found the church quite impressive and the market located just in front of the church very colorful.

More than 90% of the population of Patzun are Cakchikels, they are a group of indigenous people of Maya descent. Their culture is a mix of Mayan and Spanish influences. They wear traditional hand made costumes, and create beautiful works of weaving and wood carving.

This small chapel is located next to the main church, and is used as the town catholic church due to the restoration of the main cathedral, it was open and a mass was celebrated when we arrived.
