The climb from the village to the top of the volcano can be pretty though. The narrow road in steep and often slippery. When you are not the sporty type that can do this climb easily, it is good to know that there is always a solution if you can't go any further: a taxi.
After the group of climbers there are a few young boys following with horses. It is unbelieveble how easily these horses can climb the mountain, but they do. You can jump on one of these horses if you feel like and it will take you all the way up the volcano, and down again of course.
As far as I know there is only one decent way to get to the top of the Pacaya Volcano: by tourist bus. These busses depart from Antigua and it takes about 1,5 hours to get at the top of the Volcano.
Going there by public transportation is not possible as far as I know and getting there by car is dangerous: The road to the tops is unpaved, narrow and in very bad condition so I wouldn't take the risk of driving there yourself.
The transportation from Antigua is combined with a guided walk to the crater and costs approx. € 10,- for a 6-7 hours trip. Tours can be booked by one of the many tour agencies in the city.
WHILST YOU CAN DRIVE TO PACAYA AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THE WAY, THERE ARE QUITE A FEW TRAVEL AGENTS IN ANTIGUA WHERE YOU CAN GO ON AN ORGANISED TOUR TO PACAYA IN WHICH YOU'LL HAVE TO LEAVE AT A CERTAIN TIME. BUT I WASN'T SURE OF HOW MUCH THE PRICES WERE TO TAKE YOU THERE.
