The amount of passenger traffic between Guatemala and Mexico appears to be very little on New Years Day, and so we were limited to taking a taxi. At the zocalo in Huehuetenango idle taxi cabs wait and they can be bargined with for a ride to the border. But, expect to pay a substantial sum by a bargain adventurers standards. As I recall, we paid $35 for three people and luggage to travel about an hour to the border. From there we walked across, got our passports stamped, and found vans waiting for the longer trip to San Cristobal de las Casas. The landscape from Huehuetenango to the Mexican border is quite rugged, although the ribbon highway is adequate enough.

Buses ply the Mayan highlands, but sometimes they are either full or late in coming. Sometimes, as certain crossroads, it's possible to bargain for a ride in the back of a pickup. We were forced to do this on New Years Day, as the buses simply weren't running. Along with several others in the same situation, we piled our luggage and ourselves into the back of a small old pick up. The vehicle was heavily loaded and didn't go very fast, but at least it continued in the correct direction. Everyone nestled close to each other for warmth, but my nephew and I were situated in close quarters at the tailgate. I shot as many pictures as I could. I can't recall the rate that we paid, but it probably wasn't cheaper than the bus, but we really weren't too concerned as it wasn't a fortune either.
