  • The Bakery without white Bread

    Río Dulce Restaurants

Think the Title says it all. The sandwich wasn't bad. Decent Portion size. The Wheat bread is really a Whole Wheat with whole grains. So if you aren't into crunchies in your bread go with White. Maybe they will have it that day ....... Don't think I will try to get a favorite

  • Stay on the Rio Dulce

    Río Dulce Things to Do

There's a cute little hideaway approximately halfway between Rio Dulce town and Livingston on the beautiful Rio Dulce called Finca Tatin. It's family owned with hammocks under a big rancho and bungalows or dormitory-style for sleeping. Home-cooked, inexpensive meals are served to the guests and there are a bazillion things to do while you're there;...

Todos Santos Cuchumatán

  • Buses to Huehuetenango.

    Todos Santos Cuchumatán Transportation

There are two confirmed buses to Huehuetenango at 12.30 pm and 3.00 pm, but i´m shure that during the festival of All Saints day there are more services. We left the town early because we were thinking that (with so many alcohol everywhere) if the riders have suicidal tendencies when riding drunk, maybe the same thing can happened to the drivers.

  • Going to the horse race track.

Todos Santos Cuchumatán Things to Do

Is very easy to find the horse race track, it´s located at the end of the main road, i only needed to follow the dozens of people to find the field before the race track entrance, where all the riders were preparing (drinking the alcohol) to mount their horses. There it was a whole party, tourists, locals and the riders wandering around, looking at...

  • Day of the Death.

Todos Santos Cuchumatán Things to Do

On the second day the action moves to the cemetery, again lot of stalls selling food and drinks, and marimba with drunk people (mostly men) dancing around the graves. There are also stalls selling offerings to the deaths.

Crossing the border into Mexico is very easy at La Mesilla, as well as getting back to Guatemala. I didn't have to pay any kind of mordida whether getting into nor out of the country. Just go to the migración office and be as kind as I suppose you generally are, and you won't encounter any kind of problems.

  • Transport from HueHue to the Border

    Huehuetenango Transportation

The amount of passenger traffic between Guatemala and Mexico appears to be very little on New Years Day, and so we were limited to taking a taxi. At the zocalo in Huehuetenango idle taxi cabs wait and they can be bargined with for a ride to the border. But, expect to pay a substantial sum by a bargain adventurers standards. As I recall, we paid $35...

  • Hitchhiking the American Highway

    Huehuetenango Transportation

Buses ply the Mayan highlands, but sometimes they are either full or late in coming. Sometimes, as certain crossroads, it's possible to bargain for a ride in the back of a pickup. We were forced to do this on New Years Day, as the buses simply weren't running. Along with several others in the same situation, we piled our luggage and ourselves into...

  • HueHue's zocalo or central plaza

    Huehuetenango Things to Do

The colonial plaza is perhaps not the oldest in the region, but it has not been overly restored either. Tourists are few, and we found it pleasant to walk around free of any crowds on New Year's Day.
