Livingston is a cool town. You can only get there by boot or plane. Take the boot from Rio Dulce, this is a fanstatic trip over lake El Golfete and tru a beautiful gorge. Livingston is a relaxing place, everything goes slow. Take your time as well. In the evening there is an old lady walking around on the mainstreet selling home baked cookies. You have to try these; delicious. During daytime go off the mainstreet and walk to the residential area. Here are no tourists and locals are sometimes surprised to see tourist.
You should take a guided tour to 'Siete Altares' (Seven altars), a serie of waterfalls. Before you book this walking trip ask if there was any rainfall the last few days! When I was there it hadn't rain for a month, so there was no water falling! The hike is very nice and most of the time guided by a local boy who can tell you a lot about live in Livingston.
Don't swim in the sea! The 'beaches are not clean and the water is dirty. If you realy want to swim wear shoes or sandals or better; go up North to Belize or Mexico.
Livingston is a great place to stay for a while to relax during your backpack traveling.
