We took a shuttle bus from Antigua to La Avellana. Shuttle buses are a tad more expensive than the regular bus sysem but when time is an issue I suggest using them. Antigua is filled with tour agents that operate shuttle services, just pop into one of their offices and they can arrange pick-up and drop-off. Just pay for the service and they will give you a voucher to give to the driver.
Once in Avellana you will take a shuttle boat through a Mangrove swamp, you will pay more than locals but that's just how it is, don't argue. The trip by boat is very relaxing, you float by little homesteads, interesting bird life and wonderful Mangrove trees with huge buttresses.
Once in Monterrico prepare yourself for a stroll, a hot stroll. There is a little cantina at the dock and I would suggest picking up a soda for the trek. Just follow the dirt road through the sleepy town, lots of dogs, lots of chickens and best of all lots of pigs. Just keep on walking and all of a sudden the town fades away and you will find yourself standing in front of the massive, powerful Pacific Ocean on Baule Beach.
