Food stands: Traditional street food
Are you brave enough to try street food? I always do and Quetzaltenango was no exception. At night, several food stalls are set up in the southern part of the Parque, near the church. Most customers are the local population and you can identify the best stalls by the number of people congregated around it.The food is good, hot and inexpensive (a portion will cost you around Q7, or a dollar). The food itself is not hot or spicym but chili will always be offered (a garnish of pickled cabbage, carrots and peppers, which I liked a lot). The basic fare are fried tortillas with different toppings (the small ones are the best!) or filled with cheese or chichiron, sausages, corn on the cob (with mayo and hot sauce, for the Guatemalan touch) and various sweet offerings (churros, fried cakes, etc). Not the healthiest of meals, but cheap and very good!Always compliment the food to the ladies minding...
