A unique feature, which has favored the conservation of the lagoon and the cloud forest located in the crater, is that it is considered sacred by local people, who perform daily ceremonies and prayers in it . A special mysticism surrounds the lagoon Chicabal: the history of Mayan altars, ceremonies officiated by priests requesting the rain, the sight of huge mountains and volcanoes or the fog that creeps into the lagoon at midmorning. Chicabal is one of the most important holy places for the community Mam, one of the four largest Mayan groups in the country.

The worst part of the trek, almost 700 hundred long and asymmetric steps to the lake, i´m shure next day you will remember the visit.

If you are not visiting the lagoon in an organized tour, the best way to reach is this: From Quetzaltenango, take a bus ($0.75) two blocks north of Benito Juarez, at the intersection of 15 Avenida and 6 Calle Zona 3. Look for the bus to Chile Verde (30 minutes drive). Buses start running at 7 a.m. Tell the driver you want to go to Chicabal lagoon. From the village, it’s a one hour steep hike to the park. Entrance fees: $2. Then it’s another 30 minutes hike to get to the view point from which you can see the lake, remember that you can take the Torito (4X4 truck) $10. Be sure to arrive early as it’s usually misty after 10 a.m.
