Make sure you stop by the Monoloco while in Antigua. It's a great place to get a good meal, meet interesting travelers, and watch sports. There is always something fun going on whether it is Ladies' Night, a 4th of July party, or the Superbowl or World Cup. The food is great- large portions and fresh ingredients. The bar manager, Zac, is a great guy and especially popular with the Cougars. If you are tired of the usual Bob Marley or salsa/meringue, you will probably dig their music and atmosphere.
Best things about the Monoloco are: watching sports and drinking beers in the afternoon, eating a monster burritos or a mound of killer nachos.... getting stiff gin and tonics from Bar Tender Cougar Killer Zac for happy hour and watching the locals from the city all roll in for ladies night... Really a great place... family atmosphere for lunch and early dinner generous portions of good food and a fun place to meet and drink late nights.
I stumbled onto this place after using the internet cafe which is in the same building. The bar was full of regulars at happy hour (5-8), and Zac the bar manager seemed to know everybody. I ate a yummy burrito, and had a couple of strong rum and cokes. Zac seems to have a pretty heavy hand. This was a great place to people watch, as customers walked up to the roof top terrace for dinner.
Stop in and say hey to Zac, and ask him if you can ride the banana, which is actually three shot glasses glued to a big wooden banana. Bring a couple of friends, or grab a couple new friends at the bar.
Hideous - avoid this unless you are a 19-year-old college brat wanting to get legally drunk the first time. There are SO many great nightspots in Antigua and Monoloco really should be avoided except by the most unadventurous.
This is a sportsbar and restaurant that largely caters to foreigners. Normally not into this sort of thing, but for some reason, i just really liked it and kept finding myself coming back. the food was amazing, and they had plenty of vegetarian fare. I had an undiagnosed football withdrawl, and was amazed to find myself, quite content, parked on a bar stool for four hours here. You likely won't meet any locals, but the ex pats and foreigners that wander through were just as interesting.
there's also a great internet spot here too.
Sports bar, different from any other bar in Antigua. Great atmosphere. If you don`t like to dance but you like to drink, then this is the place for you!
