The ruins of the Santa Isabel church are just that - ruins. It doesn't seem like anyone's done any work maintaining or restoring these neglected, truly "off the beaten path" ruins in a long time. The most interesting part of visiting the ruins of the Santa Isabel church is having the opportunity to see partially uncovered statues. The easiest way to get there is to backtrack from the San Cristóbal el Bajo church, heading north along an unimproved road that winds its way between poor neighborhoods and corn fields. The Valhalla Experimental Station is an example of a working macadamia nut farm. Macadamia nut trees have been introduced as an easy-to-grow and easy-to-harvest sustainable crop with a focus on providing opportunities to local farmers to improve their livelihoods. Visitors get a tour of the operations and an explanation on the many products that can be manufactured from the harvested nuts, including soaps, lotions, oils, and of course the edible nuts themselves. Not only are the homes colorful in Antigua but there is so much more in a decorative sense. Here a basic gate becomes a decorative wall with a coat of arms and a fountain. Fountains are abundant in Guatemala. Leave a Comment

The Antigua valley is beautiful. But historically it has been a dangerous place to live. Earthquakes and the surrounding volcanoes have laid waste to much of the valley. Time and time again Antigua has been reconstructed. Leave a Comment

The road to Antigua snakes its way through the mountains. Antigua is situated in a valley. It is nestled in front of Volcan de Agua. Just out on the outskirts of Antigua the houses are full of charm. I love the architecture. Leave a Comment

ON THE NORTHSIDE OF ANTIGUA ON A HILL THERE'S A HUGE CROSS OVERLOOKING THE TOWN. TO REACH IT, YOU CAN EITHER WALK UP THE STEPS LOCATED AT THE FOOT OF THE HILL ON THE NORTHSIDE OF ANTIGUA OR YOU CAN DRIVE ON A LITTLE ROAD THAT COULD TAKE YOU UP THERE. UPON REACHING THE CROSS ON CERRO DE LA CRUZ, YOU'LL SEE A SPECTACULAR VIEW OF ANTIGUA AS WELL AS OTHER SURROUNDING SETTLEMENTS AND A FULL VIEW OF THE AGUA VOLCANO WITH THE ACATENANGO AND FUEGO VOLCANOES TO THE RIGHT.

If you have time, try hiking the beautiful Volcan Pacaya. It is a grueling 5-hour hike to the top, but in the end you are rewarded with a view into a Volcano. Leave a Comment
