Not really off the beaten path, but out of town. Take a daytrip to Panajachel to see Lake Atitlan. It's a nice drive into the highlands. The lake is very nice surrounded by volcanoes. Pana has the feel of a Mexican border town with craft stalls lining the streets. Take a shuttle boat across the lake, but avoid going to San Pedro unless you're out to get high. Other villages around the lake are much nicer, I later learned. Leave a Comment

You'll find that most of the private property is hidden from the street by imposing walls and massive doors. If you see a business sign above some nondescript door, open the door and be prepared to be amazed at what they are hiding...the courtyards can be spectacular. Leave a Comment

En 1582 se funda el Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús , situado en un lugar céntrico de Santiago de los Caballeros de Ghoatemala, actual ciudad de Antigua. La manzana jesuítica comprendía tres claustros y un templo, en el que vivían alrededor de doce Jesuitas. La función principal del Colegio era la docencia y contaba con amplias salas, biblioteca, aulas y habitaciones. Adquirió gran importancia como centro cultural y de estudios durante los años que permaneció abierto. En él se impartieron las materias de filología, filosofía y retórica. En 1767 se expulsa a todos los Jesuitas de las tierras de España y el Colegio queda deshabitado. El terremoto de Santa Marta del año 1773 lo destruyó parcialmente. Aprovechando la estructura del edificio, cien años más tarde, en 1865 se destinó a la fábrica de textiles y posteriormente a escuela hasta comienzos del siglo XX. En 1872 las posesiones de los Jesuitas pasaron al Estado y el edificio comenzó a utilizarse como mercado público, en 1912, uso que perduró hasta el terremoto del año 1976. Este terremoto dañó gravemente las estructuras, afectando a sus muros y bóvedas, de ahí, que las autoridades responsables trasladaran el mercado al lugar que ocupa en la actualidad.
