The fascinating view offered by the cerrito is magnificent. Although there are armed guards it is not advisable to climb venture out in the hillside alone or at night. Leave a Comment

Antigua is a very secure city. The perfect place to start your journey. Make in this city, your hub in your Guatemalan vacations. Leave a Comment

A danger spot to mention is the cross on a hill overlooking Antigua. Crosses are customarily erected on a highpoint above Latin cities. If you choose to visit such shrines, do so in the morning. Robbery and assault are greater and greater possibilities as the day wears on. Leave a Comment

Beware of taking pictures with indigeans..... some are just plain shy and won't wannu; but others have learned that they can ask you for money to have your picture taken with them!!!!! I just don't like some of them's attitudes... This girls on picture were fantastic about it, saw them on side road on the way to Antigua and didn't ask for any money, so I gave them some. I guess I contradict myself because in doing so I was reinforcing the begging and maybe now they'll ask for money next time someone else wants a pic with them.... :o( oops! But anyways, just in general.... lots of beggars and lots of people trying to sell you their little crafts, etc; even if you repeteadly tell same one that you don't want it, or that you already got one..... they'll ask for you to buy another one, or plainly ask you to: 'give them some food money then!' Be aware of being out late at night alone. Personally, I never went out without someone else in the evenings. Leave a Comment

Don't walk around at night - take a taxi or a tuktuk (though don't get in one if the driver looks dodgy). If you're staying any further than a couple of blocks from the main square just don't risk walking around after dark - it really isn't advisable. Muggings are very regular and if you don't have anything on you worth taking, things could get nasty. Street crime increases around the build-up to Easter's Holy Week (Semana Santa) and other religious festivals, when people need money to pay for the festivities. Don't take risks just because everyone else does.
