Rebuilt on the remains of the first catedral built in Guatemala (1543), the current structure was built years after the devastating flood in 1531 that precipated the move of the capital to nearby Antigua. The current structure is a functioning church today and has a very beautiful and interestingly decorated facade. Inside are nicely carved religous figures and a pretty altar. On the day of our visit they were setting up for Corpus Christi celebrations that were to take place that weekend. It was no problem to walk inside the church to have a look around. Definitely worth the visit.
