  • Antigua Ruins

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

This convent was begun in 1701 and was used until finally abandoned after the 1773 earthquake. Its a bit off the beaten path and has by Antigua standards a fairly steep admission price (about 5 USD). I settled for a few pics from the outside.

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

Parque Central is the heart of Antigua and house the main cathedral and the colonial governemnt buildings. It is also the center of the tourist district and the side streets leading off the plaza are full of restaurants and shops.

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

The village near Pacaya Volcano is very poor - there is not even a grocery store. There are many wonderful dogs you'll encounter on your hike. They are friendly but skinny! Please take dry dog food in zip lock bags to feed these wonderful dogs. ALSO, MORE IMPORTANT, talk to the local vendors on the hike up who sell sodas and chips. Tell them...

  • Churches

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

Confusingly, Hermano Pedro is not buried in the church dedicated to and named for him, but here in nearby San Francisco. This is one of Antigua’s oldest churches, dating back to 1579, although little of that 16th century original remains today. Instead there is a substantial largely 19th century church, with extensive ruins to one side. The saint...

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

I studied at Don Pedro de Alvarado for ten weeks ,I chose to study Spanish in Antigua after the excellent reports that I had read about the city. I stayed 10 weeks, and I wasn't disappointed. I am 65 years old, and for me it is the ideal city to study. It is a small town, quiet and easy to walk around, with an exceptional climate that is most...

  • Colonial Architecture

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

This building was originally the University of San Carlos Booremeo founded in 1676. Today it houses the colonial art musuem. Photgraphy is forbidden insde the building but I got these shots of the courtyard of the building which is the real attraction here not the art within.

  • Markets

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

Antigua might strike you at first, as it did me, as something of a museum piece, but you only have to walk a few blocks from the centre to discover that “real” life happens here too. The market on the western fringes of the old town is totally non-touristy and is a great place to explore when you’re saturated with beautiful colonial architecture...

  • Nuestra Señora de la Merced

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

The “Iglesia y Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Merced”, to give it its full name, is one of the loveliest in Antigua, and unlike many has been fully restored. On a sunny day its vibrant yellow paint and intricate white carvings are truly stunning. Notice how short the bell-tower is – a necessary precaution in this earthquake-ravaged city....

  • Walking through the city

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

While Parque Central is the undisputed hub of the city, Parque Union, lying a few blocks to the south-east, is also worth a visit. This is much more of a locals’ hang out than tourists’, although plenty of the latter come here to visit nearby churches - San Pedro and ruined Santa Clara. The square itself though deserves a little of your time. At...

  • Chichicastenango

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

We drove 3 and a half hours from Antigua to "Chichi" on Thursday, although I heard that it is best to visit on Sundays. It seems as if time has stopped here. This village is very different than Antigua and there is much indigenous presence. Actually, what is most interesting about Chichi is NOT the famed market but the activity on the incense...

  • Lago Atitlan

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

WOW, I had read that Lago ("Lake" in Spanish) Atitlan is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and boy was my research correct. On Friday, our last day in Antigua, we traveled 2 and a half hours to this wonderful magical locale. The drive itself was breathtaking. We had wanted to visit the village of Santiago Atitlan via boat but by the time...

  • Tikal

    Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

Tikal is a definite must see. From Antigua or elsewhere. We took a weekend trip including flights and hotel, although you can do it by bus. Our hotel, Tikal Inn, was right next to the ruins and the rooms were fine. Electricity is only on for certain hours which makes the 5am sunrise interesting! lunch and breakfast was included. Dinner was had at...
