Don't take much luggage. I find a waist bag very useful for film and other stuff as it leaves my hands free. I also like a camelbak (like bike racers have) is good because it gives me a way to drink water and yet I don't have to carry a bottle around. It is better than a canteen because the canteen gets tangled in the camera straps and hat chinstrap.
Two pair comfortable shoes. Light weight clothing (jeans are too heavy), and a hat.
Insect repellant and sunscreen
Don't forget to have fresh batteries for your camera. High speed film (at least 400) is needed in the shade, but in the sunny areas you will need lower speed film or things will be overexposed. Both film and batteries are VERY expensive if bought there.
Bring something that you can easily carry a lot of drinking water in when hiking in the park. You can buy water there.
A GOOD FLASHLIGHT. Not just for getting out of the park after sunset, but also for at night after the generators shut down. Leave a Comment

hippy girl with cheap shirt from local markets. by willy_wonka i know this might sound predictable, but its amazing just how many people you see walking around in high heels, or without a hat, or with no suncream. seriously, this is a hot jungle destination. its vital to take plenty of fluids, to wear a hat, and have cream. also, mosquitos can be a problem, so wear long loose clothing, or bring repellant. and for gods sake, wear good walking shoes! you will walk for miles, and climb pyramids, and walk through groundcover. wear good shoes! :) Leave a Comment

Back packs are good....you don't need a lot...strictly casual clothes
Hiking or running shoes are necessary . We spent 5 hours walking around the park . There is lots of climbing and some rough ground. Light long pants and shirts are good ....there are mosquitos.
Sunblock and deet
Lots of digital space. I couldn't believe how many pictures I took.

Unlike Chichen Itza, Tikal is very shady. But, you still might want to wear lightweight long-sleeve shirts and long pants to protect against the mosquitos, unless you like coating yourself in DEET. Besides, I'm not sure that DEET works against the tarantulas. Leave a Comment

A BACKPACK WILL DO NICELY TO CARRY STUFF YOU NEED IN.
BETTER TO WEAR LONG CLOTHING TO REDUCE THE CHANCE OF BUGS BITING YOU, SO WEAR SOME TROUSERS AS INSECTS LOVE BITING LEGS AND ANKLES! IT'LL HELP TO BRING A THIN LONG SLEEVED TOP ALONG BUT SOMETIMES YOU CAN WEAR A T-SHIRT IF YOU'RE IN THE OPEN IF YOU GET TOO HOT. TRAINERS OR HIKING SHOES WILL DO. DEPENDING WHAT TIME OF YEAR IT IS, YOU MIGHT WANNA PACK A RAIN COAT IN YOUR BAG IN CASE IT RAINS.
OF COURSE YOU'LL NEED ANTI-MALARIA PILLS IF YOU TRAVELLING TO THIS AREA OF GUATEMALA. A BOTTLE OF DEET INSECT REPELLENT SPRAY WILL BE VERY USEFUL TO KEEP THE MOSQUITOES AT BAY. SPRAY YOUR LEGS, ANKLES, ARMS, THE BACK OF YOUR HANDS, AND NECK WITH IT.
OF COURSE YOU'D MIGHT WANNA BRING A CAMERA ALONG AS THERE ARE MANY PHOTOGENIC LOCATIONS AROUND TIKAL.
BRING A 1.5 LITRE BOTTLE OF DRINKING WATER ALONG AS YOU'LL FIND YOU'LL BE DOING A LOT OF WALKING HERE. A LITTLE SNACK MAY HELP TOO.
