Actually Tikal is well worth the visit, in spite of the US$22 we had to pay as foreigner (compared to the US$2.00 locals pay). The pyramids are impressive and the tour is fantastic. We decided not to pay for a guide, since it was so expensive (US$60.00) but dought a map (about US$2.00) and went about the park without problems.
Heat in April is strong, so I would advise you on bringing huge bottles of water along. But we got to see many gorgeous animals, monkeys, birds, and many others, no jaguar though, they only come out at night.
The view from the top of the tallest Pyramids is amazing, especially since you realize how large the site actually is and how much must still remain hidden in the jungle.

After an extensive visit of the park (around 3 hours) we went to El Remate, the village half way between Tikal and Flores, where we were staying, El Remate finds itself by the shores of Lake Peten Itza, a clear water lake where we really enjoyed taking a bath and playing in the water. We ate at Mon Ami, a small restaurant managed by a French expat. Food was good but took an extremely long time to reach our table (we were the only ones there!!!) But that seems to be the way things are in that area, since the same happened for breakfast at Yaxha or dinner in Flores, cooks apparently are in no hurry :)
