Booking for Tours on-line for Guatemala trips

by jumpingnorman

I called travel agencies I saw on-line and decided that the one who responded quickest whenever I had a question would be the one I would choose. After I emailed, I got a quick response from Alejandro Tez of Turansa Tours. His email was clear and I asked questions and he answered within 24 hours. My next test was to see if they answered their phone calls, and I did get to talk with him. And my tours in Guatemala were all well-arranged and very professionally handled. The vouchers are sent by email but the originals were given to me once I was picked up from my hotel during my first tour. I also make sure that the agency has a 24 hour hotline and Turansa did have a 24 hr phone at (502) 5651-2284. They do have a nice website at www.turansa.comI even got to meet Alejandro Tez himself when I went to Antigua since the driver had to go to the office first (5a Calle Oriente #10-A Tels (502)...

On Line Videos of Guatemala

by vaticanus

Take a peek at www.youtube.com and enter a search for Guatemala. There are enough homemade videos to give you a hint of what you will see and hear. Why stop with Guatemala? I wonder what India would show. All things considered, why leave home at all. ;) YouTube puts the whole world on your screen.

EXCHANGING BUYING CURRENCY

by vaticanus

Exchange Your Foreign Currency Early in the DayThe exchange rate for the Quetzal (Guatemala's currency) is calculated once a day by the central bank in Guatemala City. This is done around 3 PM. What this means for you is that many banks will refuse to change traveler's checks after 3 PM. Why? They are waiting to hear what the new rate is from Guatemala City. Also know that not all banks handle foreign currency. IMPORTANT: ALWAYS ask for small bills and One Quetzal coins while at the bank. Getting large bills exchanged for smaller denominations is difficult on the street! Even a 20 Quetzal bill will cause problems. IMPORTANT: The exchange window at Aurora Airport in Guatemala is not dependable for hours open or availability of dollars if you are selling Quetzales. If you can, buy a few Quetzales at your departure airport before you enter Guatemala- especially if you will arrive at...

Flores, Santa Elena and Lago Peten Itza

by sachara

Flores is built on an island in the Lago Peten Itza. The first time I visited Tikal I came by plane from Guatemala City to Flores. From the air I had a nice view at Flores air and the 500m long causeway which connects Flores with its sistertown Santa Elena at the lake shore (pictiures 1 and 2).I didn't visit Flores, though it must be a nice and tranquil town. The second time I visited Tikal and was in the area, I only got a glimpse of Flores from the lakeshore (picture 5). This time I came by bus and had a short stop in the main street of Santa Elena for visiting a bank (pictures 3 and 4) before heading to Tikal in the dark.

Historical issues and list of resources

by tampa_shawn

Understandind Guatemala and it's violent history For those who wish to understand this history and the issues surrounding it - I have providing a partial listing of articles that are available on-line to the general public. The following articles should provide you with a basis of knowledge on Guatemala's past and current issues. A note of warning though - I have found from personal experience and research that when it comes to war and violence there are many sides of the story and in many instances people will defend their side to the death. I am assuming this is also true for Guatemala – so when reading the following remember…. The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple. - Oscar Wilde I will add more articles as I come across them and will delete links from less reliable sources as I find better sources These articles are about violence issues and are therefore for...

Information on Guatemala from the World Bank

by tampa_shawn

It has been ten years since the Peace Accords that ended a debilitating 36-year civil war were signed. The World Bank (to my surpise) defines Guatemala as a middle income country. In 2000 - - 56% of all Guatemalans (and 76 percent of indigenous groups) lived in poverty- 16% of Guatemalans lived in extreme poverty (defined as poverty that kills - at this level people lack the basics for life - food, clothes and shelter - the UN often defines this group as living on less than $1 to $2 US a day)Poverty and therefore the poverty indicators that we track are improving + Gross national income has increased from $1740 in 2000 to $2400 in 2005+ Childhood mortality have decreased from 53/1000 children under 5 dying in 2000 to 45/1000 childhood deaths in 2004 + Secondary school enrolment (Jr High) has increased from 38% in 2000 to 48.6% in 2005 (meaning 48.6% of secondary school aged children are...

The Life

by jurok

I truly love the people, and the environment. I was lucky to live here 4 years when I was younger and have traveled here numerous times. I always enjoy my trips to Tikal so if you have the chance to go I highly recommend it. The same goes with the beaches like the Puerto San Jose. Antigua is a must go with colonial style culture and delicious food. Panajachel is an enourmous lake with a touristy town. Lots to do here and plenty of treasures to buy and experience. My fondest memory in Guatemala is traveling to a family owned fruit and coffee plantation in the back of my uncles run down green ford truck. I loved traveling like that. We would always have fruit in the back and would make the occasional stop for coconuts and to chop down a few sticks of cane to chew on. I'd watch all the different people and landscape pass buy relaxed in the back of that truck. Those were some of the few...

Languages - Getting along with English (or not??)

by AnnaLupilla

Although English is said to be THE universal language itself, it is highly recommendable to know some basic words and phrases by entering Guatemala, as, besides tourist resorts, it is fairly difficult to find English-speaking people. No need to speak Spanish fluently, though. Also should be mentioned that even little knowledge of the local language can open doors throughout the country and if you once entered the local society be aware of their kindness ;-)
