See all the National Costumes - the colours and styles of each different villages' traditional dress are truly amazing - in fact the vibrancy of colours in the whole country is something which will stay with me forever!

Favourite things - climbing Volcan Pacaya, visiting Chichicastenango, sailing across beautiful Lago di Atitlan, swimming in Lago Peten Itza, climbing to the top of the temples in Tikal. Seeing the temples in Tikal for the first time, attending an amazing wedding (the reason we were in Guatemala), seeing spider monkeys etc.

Attempt to visit the Guatamalan highlands. Around Lago di Atitlan sits three commanding volcanoes overseeing proceedings. The population is mostly mayan here and isolation is an understatement. This is a near to exploration as you get on Central America.

Soccer is an important game in Central America. But it is also fun. One memory of soccer that just popped into my mind, was a vision of a bunch of kids playing the game on a small field on the edge of a steep hillside. Well, cliffs are what they were. And, we were driving past the game, looking out of our Nissan Patrol window, watching the game against the background of a large valley, Lake Atitlan, and a cloud-covered volcano on the opposite bank.
Another fond memory of Guatemala, is meeting and visting at the house of, and with the former President of Guatemala. I knew him before he was President, and we got a chance to have dinner with him at his (quite nice) house.
Go to Chichicastenango for a really neat and colorful market. One of my fondest memories oin Guatemala, was many years ago, one of the first times I visited the country. As a five-year-old blonde white boy, I was enjoyed by the locals as something they rarely saw. Somewhere around Chichicastenango we hiked up the hillside to buy some souvenirs, though the shops weren't as plentiful as they are today, and the objects bought were handmade, and not made in China. My father wanted me to do the haggling for the little thing I wanted. What it was, I don't remember. But, looking back on it, that experience was really amazing to me, as I was able, at that early an age, to haggle with people in another country, in another language, for something I wanted. The opportunity to do so, and the act of doing it I see as having built in me character, and humility, as today, though I am quite good at...
Check out Volcan de Agua. It has a wonderful conical shape and you can see the trails left behind by the water and mud. It's especially beautiful in changing light - morning or evening. When arriving to or leaving Antigua, take the time to stop and admire the volcano!
