Well, my trip to Guatemala was short- too short, but I would highly reccomend visiting the ruins in Antigua and, if you have the chance, taking a trip into the jungle to see how people live in the indian villages. My fondest memory- well I fell in love with the whole country, but I loved visiting the Children in the indian village- I took their pictures with a poloroid i-zone, so I could give them their picture, and these children were sooo amazed. They had never before seen a camera!!! It was so interesting to see the differences in our cultures.

Guatemala is full of surprises. Everything is easy. Everywhere you go you may find something to remember, but don't lose Tikal, Panajachel and Atitlan Lake and little towns, Antigua and Chichicastenango...among others... Watching the sunset in Tikal mayan ruins in the middle of the rain forest... it just let you remember how brief is our time on earth and why we have to seize the days we still have...

Sorry, but I spent 9 months in Quatemala but most of the time was in the Jungle, about 1-1/2 hour flight from Quatemala City. The well I was drilling was about 12 km from the Mexico border and about 100 km from Belize. Made several freinds while there.

Go see Tikal!! Really the crowning achievement in a certain sense of the Mayan people. What was really neat about visiting was the close interaction between yourself and the wildlife right around you. We had monkey's jumping and jostling from tree to tree, right over our heads. They had their little babies with them and I think they were a bit put off with us invading their space. It was pretty cool though to be that close to something that wild. While also walking around Tikal we actually got to see a very large Toucan. The bird was quite shy and kept hopping from tree to tree, so it was difficult to get a good shot of him. However, I finally did get a pretty good still of him on the vid cam. All of this is topped by actually walking the ruins. When you think about the sheer size and mass of the structures it really speaks to what an accomplishment the place truely is. I don't know how...

You absolutely must spend a few days in Antigua. Try not to spend all your time there, but it is worth at least a few days. It is a very picturesque town, with a lot to see and do, and great photo opportunities! My fondest memory of Guatemala is a strip of black-sanned paradise, the beach town of Monterrico on the Pacific Ocean. What makes this place so special to me is the people I met there, and the memories of the time that we spent together. The beach itself was beautiful as well. I had never been to a beach with black sand or with waves so powerful, and it was intense! The time I spent there was so serene and kicked-back, and was a much needed break from the frenetic energy of the other towns I had been visiting. Check out my travel diary on my website (http://guatemala.westside.com) for my stories of Monterrico.

by Carlo-B.

Gutemala city doesn't offer much to see and is not a very safe place to go around. The triangle gutemala city - antigua - atitlan is higly interesting. Even if you are not particularly interested in the ancient Maya world, you shouldn't miss the lost city of Tikal which is one of the most fascinating place i have never visited. Tikal. Thisl place shows pyramids, temples and ruines in the middle od of tropical jungle. It gives you an impressive atmosphere of mistery and adventure, like you were indiana jones beginning an exploration. Something probably analogue to the Angkor-Wat in Cambodja.

Other - General Infos I

Guatemala is a country gathering its wits after thirty-odd years of insane civil war. Budget-challenged travellers have been drawn to the country throughout this period of turmoil because it offers Central America in concentrate form: its volcanoes are the highest and most active, its Mayan ruins the most impressive, its earthquakes the most devastating and its history of repression decidedly world-class.Guatemala is the Mayan heartland of Central America, though the government has both touted and tortured the Maya - sticking pictures of them on its tourist brochures while sticking guns in their faces. Despite this, indigenous Guatemalan culture is alive and well, in the ancient ruins of Tikal, the Mayan/Catholic rituals of Chichicastenango and the blazing colors of everyday Mayan dress. Since the peace treaties were signed, inspiring even the least-intrepid travellers to venture beyond...

My favorite memory is of sitting on top of this temple in Tikal and looking out over the jungle. My friend and I were up there for over 2 hours with no other visitors other than birds and monkeys. The monkeys even put on a rather interesting show for us.

As i mentioned i have spent alot of time in Antigua. There are alot of language schools. They will even set you up with a family including room and board. Ask to meet and see a few families homes first. Dont be embarasssed to be a little picky about the family or accomadations, this will also make the difference in meals (but keeping in mind this is a third world country) I was and it paid off big time. They will take advantage if possible. Again I recomend 'Cervants' school, after spending time at other schools i switched to that school. I guess the hiking and social life I met many Europeans that I am still friends with today. The Guatamalans are nice but hard to know. If you go to school though you can socialize with the local teachers. I had many lessons in the market, dancing and short day trips! I also liked the food!

by peace4all

Visit Tikal. When you're standing on a temple, high above the trees, you feel at one with the world and yourself. There's a mysteriousness in Tikal that is supremely beautiful. The wildlife abounds, and you will see animals, birds, and foilage there that can't be found anywhere else. The creatures you will probably see most are the monkeys, and their antics are most amusing! Tikal is not something you can do in one day, and I would recommend staying at one of the three (pricey) hotels inside the park (I personally recommend the Jungle Lodge) becase the best time of day to see Tikal is early in the morning and late in the evening: in other words before and after the tourist busses run. There are many tourists in the afternoon, the best course of action would be to eat lunch, take a nap or a swim at your hotel during this time and come back around four or later (when the busses leave),...
