La Fonda--ahhh, authentic delicious Guatemalan food. The food here is superb, even Bill Clinton ate here when he visited Antigua. The restaurant is so successful, it has opened 2 other locations as well.

You have to get, the House Soup--CALDO REAL. Filled with Chicken, rice, fresh cilantro, onions, and spices, it is an excellent introduction to delicious Guatemalan cooking. I went back 3 times just for this soup!

Multiple Names. aka PATAYA: Exotic Cactus Fruit in Panajachel- SABROSA!
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a regional delicacy. It looks like something from the planet of Venus or Mars. Outside it is green with flexible protrusions. Slicing it in half reveals a rich luscious purple flesh and numerous tiny black seeds that are easily digestible. The consistency is something like gelatin and yoghurt. The flavor is delicate yet complex. It is only available while in season which is in the Spring. It is harvested from the wild and the supply is extremely limited. If you see it- try it. I have only seen it in Panajachel, the tourist mecca on the shore of Lago Atitlan in the state of Solala.

Pollo Campero's: Chicken all the way!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • It is basically a Guatemalan take on KFC. The reason I suggest this is for anybody that is as sensitive to bacterias OR seem prone to travelling sicknesses, it is a safe place to eat. Food is prepared in a clean matter and is fully cooked, always important.

Well, seeing as it is like KFC, and you probably know what that kinda food is (greasy fried chicken.....) I suggest the chicken salad. It is actually really good, kinda a chief salad of sorts.

-sorry, I dont have a pic of Campero's, but its not easy to miss. On the other hand, here is a pic of me on the back of a pickup (most common means of local travel...) in panajachel.

The cafe is an old colonial house built in 1549 around a beautiful courtyard and the cafe also has lots of little rooms and outside tables - beautiful!

    There are lots of restaurants...
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are lots of restaurants in Antigua Guatemala - all different sort of food - it's a pretty touristy place! You could also try Frida's (mexican), or Cafe Flor (asian) for good quality, reasonably priced food. We had a fantastic brunch at the best hotel in Antigua (whose name escapes me for present - but it is a converted monastery - their grounds are worth a wander around!)
