Officialy the National Palace of Culture, the second floor now hosts an astonishing world class gallery of paintings and sculpture. Iglesia y Convento de la Recolección, Antigua

by iwys

The Iglesia y Convento de la Recolección was built by friars recoletos between 1701 and 1708. The impressive ruins you see today are what remain after the massive earthquake of 1773. Considering the number of ruined churches and monasteries there are to see in Antigua, admission to this one is quite expensive, but you can see most of the ruins, for free, from the road outside.Admission: $4Opening hours: 9am-5pm

Panajachel

by iwys

Panajachel, with a population of 15,000, is the biggest town on the shores of Lago de Atitlan. It is also the main tourist centre, with plenty of hotels and restaurants. Boat trips round the lake depart from here.

Tip Photo
San Antonio Palopó

by iwys

San Antonio Palopó is a Mayan village on a steep hillside on the eastern shore of Lago de Atitlán. with a population of just 2650, it is one of the smaller lakeside villages, but I found it the most interesting, perhaps because they were preparing for a fiesta when I was there. There is also an interesting weaving workshop here, where you can buy traditional textiles.

Tip Photo
San Pedro de Laguna

by iwys

San Pedro de Laguna is a lakeside Mayan village near the western end of Lago de Atitlan. People here wear traditional clothes and the local market is very photogenic. San Pedro is a good place to buy local textiles and coffee.

Tip Photo
Santiago Atitlán

by iwys

Santiago Atitlán is a Mayan village on the south shore of Lago de Atitlán. It is surrounded by three volcanoes: Volcán de San Pedro, Volcán Tolimán and Volcán Atitlán. The main attractions are the shrine of Maximón and the church in the square. People here wear traditional clothes and market days on Fridays and Sundays are colourful affairs.

Tip Photo
Flores

by iwys

Flores is a pretty town on an island in Lago de Peten Itza. It is connected to the mainland by a 500m causeway. It was founded by the Itza people after they were driven out of Chichen Itza. It is believed that this was the last stronghold of the Mayans before they were finally conquered by the Spaniards in the 17th century. The Spanish totally destroyed the Mayan temples and city here and what you see now is a colonial town. Most people stop here on their way to Tikal.

Tikal

by iwys

TIP IN PROGRESSTikal, with its soaring pyramids reaching a height of more than 70 metres, is the most impressive of all the Mayan sites. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the best places in Central America to see wildlife.Admission: $7Opening hours: 6am-6pm

Lago de Atitlán

by iwys

Lago de Atitlán is a beautiful lake in the Guatemalan highlands, surrounded by dramatic volcanoes and Mayan villages. One of the highlights of any trip to Guatemala is a boat trip round the lake, stopping at the lakeside villages.Aldous Huxley loved it here and wrote, "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlán is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing."The boat trip I took cost Q75 per person. It left Panajachel at 8.30am, stopped at San Pedro de Laguna, Santiago Atitlán and San Antonio Palopo, before returning to Panajachel at 4pm. It was great.

Tip Photo
Chichicastenango

by iwys

Chichicastenago is a magical market town nearly two thousand metres up in the Guatemalan highlands. Try to be there on a Thursday or Sunday, when Mayan villagers bring their wares in to the traditional market. It's particularly good for textiles, ceramics and woodcarving. The market is overllooked by the 400-year-old Church of Santo Tomás (see photo 4), which was originally the site of Mayan temple. You can still see shamans practising on the steps leading up to the church.
