by VinTolucci Getting around Guate is fairly easy. Just make sure you carry a map to orient yourself. Other than that, the front of the bus will tell you where they are going. The bus driver doesn't accept metrocards. On the plus side he does make change. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

"Rutas Orientales" located in 19 calle 8-18, zona 1, will take you to the city of Chiquimula, near the border on the way to Copan Ruins in Honduras. price is very cheap, only 22Q ( 8Q=1USD) with a/c. it takes about 3.5 hours. there, take a car to the El florido town, ask where in the bus terminal, Chiquimula was kind of safe to me. a small bus full of locals take me to the border, a empty place, only 1USD, for there only 20 minutes away i reach the Copan city. (bus 10L, 14L=1USD ) a total of less than 5 USD. compared with the 45 USD for the same way with a travel agency! Leave a Comment Theme: BusPhone: 251-2160 / 253-7282

Oh no! Not Again! by vaticanus There are many areas in the Highlands of Alta Verapaz and north of Huehuetenango with hazardous narrow roads. Although vans are becoming popular, used school buses from the US are still used. Seats have little leg room and it can get very uncomfortable on the knees for those with long legs. AVOID sitting in the last seat of the bus and expecially AVOID sitting over the rear wheelwell. Backpacks and luggage are lashed down on top of the bus- DON'T WORRY. The ticket taker knows it is yours. In bad weather covers are pulled over the luggage. Tips are not given by the locals but it doesn't hurt to give the guy a couple Quetzales for stowing your bag. You can bring your smaller bags inside the bus which have overhead racks. DON'T BE SURPRISED to see 6 or more people sitting across one row of seats with one person sitting awkwardly suspended over the aisleway. It's always fascinating to see how the ticket taker squeezes his way through the packed passengers to collect fares. He may not have change- you'll have to wait for it if you don't have small bills. Before boarding a bus give the tires a look-see and check for overloading (especially on mountain routes). You want to be alert for unscrupulous operators who cut corners on maintenance. In all liklihood you will be very far off the beaten tourist track to find a bus that is too worn and old to operate safely. Chicken buses now operate from "EL TREBOL" a major roadway interchange in Zona 8 (take Avenida Bolivar from downtown) See my Guatemala page for comments about crime and transportation. From Guatemala City we made an excursion to Tikal by plane with Aeroquetzal. From the plane we had a nice veiw at the city, the mountians and the forest. Just before landing we saw the lake Peten Itza with Flores at an island. We took a morning flight to Tikal. You can return the same day in the afternoon, like many visitors didi. But we decided to stay and took the afternoon flight of the next day back to Guatemala City. The airport is not far from Flores. From the airport you can go by bus to the ruins of Tikal. a guate guate guate!!! by christiebyrne Traveling around the Antigua area is super cheap by chicken bus! It's also quite the experience...The "chicken bus" is a beautifully painted school bus. In the US, about 2 or 3 children can fit in a seat. However, in Guate, 3 adults(2 actually in the seat...one using the "ley de Horacio---una nalga en el espacio" where you halfway sit into the ailse!) not to mention however many children can squeeze in there with their parents. Besides the seated folks, people also stand in the ailes on the very crowded routes. All this while the driver zips around curves like a "loco" and the fare collector climbs over those in the center aile. The radio blasts and beggars and salesmen often come on board to peddle their wares. Try entering from the back if a bus is really crowded...often there is more space in the back, and you wont have to squeeze your way through the whole bus. WATCH YOUR BAGS!!!! the crowded nature of the buses mean pick-pockets abound. I prefer small hard bags you can wear close to your body...those hippy-type bolsos they sell in antigua are easy to slice open and you wont even feel it! I know MANY people, tourists and Guatemalas alike, who have been robbed on the bus. Also, less common is the whole bus stick-up...This happened to one of my friends who was coming back from San Pedro to Antigua. Also, I pays to know the cost of your fare...They (very rarely) over-charge the tourists. All that scary stuff being said...the price difference between the chicken bus and tourist shuttles is incredible. As long as you are smart, it's pretty safe and easy to travel in the chapin style! Theme: Bus

Here is the loop of Central America I took going through Lago Atitlan, Antigua, Tikal and Belize back to Mexico. The best way to go Antigua from Mexico is by San Cristobal de Las Casas. You can get a bus to Ciudad Cuauhtemoc on the boarder and cross into La Mesilla, Guatemala. Once in Guatemala you have to take about 6 chicken buses to Panajachel which is on lago Atitlan (gorgeous lake). It is not to difficult to do as the people are increadibly friendly, but it is quite an adventure. Once at the lake get a taxi to San Pedro on the other side as it is far nicer than touristy Panajachel. From the lake you can take a bus to Antigua the colonial capital and from there a taxi to the main bus station in Guatemala City. From Guatemala city you can take a bus to Flores which is the Peten about 3 hours south of Tikal (this is an over night bus). From here Flores take a mini bus to el remate which is right on Lago de Peten Itza. There is good budget accomodation here and the lake is nice. Ther e is also a nice nature park called Biotopo Cerro Cahui nearby to visit. From El Remate (which means "dead end") you can grab a noon bus into Tikal and stay the night at the Jaguar Hotel. You can camp there as well. There are a couple of small restaurants here where you can eat your meals. Stay the night and see the temples the next morining and head back to El Remate. From El Remate you can grab a minitaxi to El Cruce on the junction of Guatemala City and Belize. Grab a bus to the Belize boarder of Melchor de Mencos. You can stay at a great place called the Trek Stop past the Boarder on the way to San Ignacio. Xunantunich (Mayan ruins) is nearby and teh Belize River is quite nice. From San Ignacio you can get a bus to the capital of Belmopan and then on to Belize City where you can grab a bus to the Mexican boarder towards Chetumal. From Chetumal you can grab a bus to Tulum and then on to Cancun. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

by DianeDundee We flew from London to Houston (all gateways from Europe are in general through the US) but you can try through New York, Miami or Atlanta as well. On arrival in Guatemala City we had organised a taxi to take us to Antigua! We generally used a guide and his transport because there was a group of between 6 and 25 on any of the days that we were there. We rented our own boat to cross Lago Di Atitlan - with 10 of us it was not expensive and the boat was much quicker than the public ferries which meant that we got to see much more in the day we had there! The local buses are very colourful and very cheap! Just make sure you are not hanging out the back door! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

BUS 83 Guatemala CIty by vaticanus GANGS ARE TARGETING CITY BUSES. RIDING CITY BUSES IS NOT ADVISED. Use of the 83 is not necessary (I recommend taxis) but is an alternative way to get from the airport (Zona 13) to downtown (Zona 1) through (Zonas 9, 10). Bus 83 will get you to/from the airport (Zona 13), the museums and zoo (Zona 10), government offices (Zona 4) and the central business district and National Palace (Zona 1). NOTE: The 2nd class bus terminal in Zona 4 is closed. It has moved to "El Trebol" a major cloverleaf interchange in Zona 8. A cab or the TransMetro (see below) will take you there. Of course, the tourist vans that leave from many hotels and travel agencies are your best bet for getting to Antigua, Panajachel, Copan, etc etc Not all 83 buses follow the same route. Look for a sign saying "Aeropuerto" or "Aurora" in the window and confirm with the driver. Bus fare is ONE quetzal and the driver will make change (all of it in coins). You can board at the front of the bus or the side door. NOTE: Make sure your valuables are secure (and not tucked into a back pocket!!!). If you are standing you will be very busy holding on to rails and seat bars to keep your balance and if the bus is crowded.... (note however, that pickpockets are far less skilled than those in Mexico City and many European cities). Be on guard against distractions causing you to NOT PAY ATTENTION. NOTE Getting on buses to see where they go is not a good idea. Many residential neighborhoods "colonias" are unsafe because of gangs. Outsiders are not welcome. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Local Bus by Albernfrau Local buses are a great way to explore villages just outside of cities. They are dirt cheap and give you a great opportunity to travel with the locals. Unless your Spanish is good you essentially guess when to get off and on but we managed to explore without problems. The buses are colourful and felt pretty safe to drive in.
