Travelling by bus is very cheap, busses are sometimes very overcrowded and it is possible that the busdriver drive past while you're standing in the rain. Expect some waiting period - from some minutes to some hours... :)

I crossed the border from and to Mexico by bus. It was easy although I had to pay a little money that often described as bribe.
Bus system in Guatemala is one of the best in the world. I'm not kidding. It's cheap, efficient and fast. You have to know the route and time that runs, but besides that, it's great. You show up at where bus stops and someone will be asking you where you're going, or you ask. The bus gets really crowded, like 3 adults in an US school bus size seat, but you just need to get used to it. It's usually jam packed.

Also, they put your big backpack etc. on the top of the's very safe. It doesn't fall it seems.

Once, my bus had a trouble and it stopped in the middle of nowhere and all the passengers were left there, but another bus came in in less than 5 min. and i was fine.

From Europe you can go to Guatemala city by plane over Mexico city ( iberia, lufthansa, KLM, air france, alitalia) or by american companies via atlanta (united or AA).
Swiss don't fly to mexico city-
From guatemala-city to Tikal , you have first to go to flores. By plane (Taca group) it will take ca. 40min. to 1 hour. By car it will take 14 hours, but because the road runs in the middle of the jungle, it is not always possible to drive there. It's not recommended to drive alone to flores. From flores to tikal it's about 40 min. by car. From el ramate and the hotel winston camino real it will take about 20min. by car until Tikal.

From Mexico (Palenque) is possible to reach Tikal partly by car and partly by boat. People describe this trip as a very nice one . The part by car in Mexico (chiapas) could be dangerous because of high incidence of robbery and wil be sometimes excorted by the army.

I couldn't find a flight between florel and cancun althought teoretically they are sheduled by Taca Group and Aeromexico.

The best way to go around is with the ordinary chickenbusses. It's amazing how many people can fit in these and how everybody still can sleep in this crowd on the terribly bumpy roads, but it's a great way of traveling and the best way to get in contact with the locals.
They will try to rip you of,but then it's still cheap.

It's far better to get to Guatemala by plane than by bus.
It's faster, more comfrotable and not that expensive.
Going by bus is terrible! The roads go through the mountains and crossing the border is a really time consuming activity.

We didn't have the opportunity to take one of these but we will next time. These are the famous chicken buses. We were really surprised when we saw how beautifully painted and polished they were.

More goods arriving at the market. Truck version of the Chicken Bus. 20 People!!

    Hire a driver.

Sometimes just offering someone a few bucks to get you around will work. Riding around in a pickup is a fun way of seeing the town. Make sure you hold on tightly.
