January 2004--As soon as you retrieve your baggage you will have people coming up to you asking to carry your luggage. I would encourage you to turn them down by saying "non mesi" (no thank you). Be firm. If at all possible try to make drive arrangements in advance! Ridding in a tap tap with luggage probably ain't a good idea. Taxi would be feasible...

November 2004-- The scene is much improved now at the airport, mainly where you receive your baggage off the belt. They have installed glass panels that seperate the travellers from the baggage haulers. However the scene is still chaos when you exit the airport.

Keep your things close, be firm and don't stand around to long, since it implies you don't know what you are doing!

    Police
  • Tip Rating:
  • November 2004-- The UN has established a 2000 troop police force to help train the Hatian National police. During my trip in November the National police was much different then when I was there in January. It seemed most of them had respect for their job and did it with a level of dignity. i had a few encouraging interations with them, especially at the airport. Don't forget that judgement is key.

January 2004--Make sure to take in account the potential danger of conversing with police. Most realize that you are probaly rich and will want something from you. I had to help my freind get out of a bind because he did not speak french. They started asking me to leave them somethnig so I quickly decided it was time to terminate conversation. Told them I had to rejoin a friend and left. (the shotgun he had was somewhat intimadating)......I realized a week after my trip that I had got a picture of him....

    Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • I wouldn’t recommend buying most things that aren't cooked, washed or peeled. However you can use your judgement. I bought things like peanut butter in a packaged jar and sugar cane to. Don't miss out on the fresh fruit but make sure it is prepared correctly! Watch those side street vendors.....
