If you decide to go to a outdoor marketplace; please make sure to go with a group of people. Some of the merchants are very aggressive. They will try to surround the tourists and convince them to buy their wares. You can get some really good deals... but beware they do not want you to leave without buying anything. Leave a Comment

Haiti is a political hot bed at the moment, and there is plenty of anti-American sentiment. Also, the Haitian military and police are corrupt, and will often try to extort money from the while tourists for fake traffic or customs violations, etc. Speaking of customs, don't take anything with you that you'd be heart broken to lose. Customs officials are notorious for giving tourists a hard time entering the country. Leave a Comment

When we were there, the first free election in Haiti's history went on. There were still problems from time to time, and often they manifested themselves as riots or roadblocks. The pic was taken from a helicopter as we flew over one of those roadblocks. Leave a Comment

BEWARE OF THE HUGE TRUCKS!! Actually, beware of every vehicle. The roads in Haiti are very narrow and the people drive pretty fast for the conditions. The huge trucks are generally filled with bananas, or with about 20 people (they are called Tap-Taps). Leave a Comment

I would advise people not to go out at night by themselves. I did go to discos at night, but I always brought at least one Haitian guy along with me that could talk us out of situations. I would also advise that you stick in groups for most activities. It can be intimidating if you don't know the language to go out by yourself. Leave a Comment

Haiti is pretty unsanitary, and you'll probably get sick if you eat the food or drink the water. Oh, and there aren't really any highways in Haiti. There's one, but you need an offroad vehicle to get down it, as you might have to ford rivers or cross gigantic ruts in the roads. Leave a Comment
