 | Copán Off the Beaten Path | Tips 1 - 7 of 7 | | Popular Off the Beaten Path | Miscellaneous Off the Beaten Path Tips | All Tips (7) located some 45 minutes on a rough track out of copan village, you will come across the beautiful hot springs known as 'agua caliente'. when we were there we were the only 'tourists' as such, and a few other locals and children were there too. the hot springs were soooo beautiful, located next to a river set in the jungle. we had a bbq dinner cooked by a local for US$5, and we bought along beer too. laying in the warm water, floating, drinking beer, having fun. it was a great time! on the way back, anna wonka felt the full effects of drinking too much beer on a rough bouncy dirt track. anna wonka had her head hanging over the tailgate of the pickup, spewing her guts out. not the prettiest sight! even worse was seeing the stray goats and chickens running to her spew to pick up whatever food scraps had come out. that was gross. but i digress, back to the tip people! the hot springs are well worth it, and definitely good to go there for sunset and the early evening. from copan village, just tell a local in a pickup you want to go to 'aqua caliente'. they will know it. About 1 kilometer from the Ruinas de Copan, one can walk into the Sepulturas. This small adjacent site is where the high class of Copan lived. It's an interesting and desolated place that sees few travellers compared to the main attraction of Copan. Leave a Comment

While the ruins of Copan can be enjoyed with any number of books and pamphlets that abound in the shops in town or on the internet, it is a different experience to have a guide give you a tour of the grounds. This can be arranged once you arrive, and usually costs about US$20 for a couple of hours. It is totally worth the cost. The guides, who speak English fairly fluently, are very knowledgeable about the ruins. They can tell you at length about the different customs that the Mayans practiced (and how it is evident in the architecture they left behind), the history of the region both pre- and post-Mayan, and the ongoing restoration efforts that are happening at the site. I found them to be an immense help in bringing Copan to life before my eyes, in ways that a book could not have done. They also help point out different aspects, relics, etc. that books would consider too small to mention... shards of pottery, the different specks of color on the stelae, the history and folklore of the people who lived there. It is an interesting learning adventure in the park, one not to be missed should you visit Copan.
