Copan site, in the middle of the forest
  • Tip Rating:
  • The walk from the visitorscentre to the ancient site is about 400m. Along the path leading to the Grupo Principal are several trees and flowering plants, some with an explanation.

Halfway the site a at the right hand site a nature trail (sendero natural) enters the forest. We saw also some unexcavated structures along the path covered with trees.

    Sculpture Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the grounds of the ruins is a great new museum you should not miss, the sculpture musuem. Some of the greatest sculptures and pieces from the site are preserved here. Included a replica of Rosalila Temple which was discovered buried beneath the Acropolis by archeologists.

    The main square
  • Tip Rating:
  • On the other side of the bushes on the picture is the place where all the locals hang around. This is the same square where I took the picture of the cowboys sitting down.

When I'm talking about cowboys I mean real cowboys! With horse and all!

This picture is actually not an exception. I was amazed to see that this is a serious way for the locals to carry their stuff around town. Time stood stil here...

    local market
  • Tip Rating:
  • While strolling through the streets we discovered that inside the house blocks there were all marketplaces. The people were so friendly. I bought 5 cigars tied together with a piece of straw and I got two bananas for free with it!

Copan, colourful macaws at the entrance
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the entrance of the ancient site of Copan lots of colourful macaws are hanging around the building and fences. On our way back the birds were still there, making a lot of noise.

We saw that the guardians were feeding them, so that will be the reason why these huge birds are always there. It´s was fun to look at the birds.

    Acropolis
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Acropolis is where the elite class of Copan lived, worked and worshipped. It had its own plazas and temples and likely the inhabintants never made it to the lower levels inhabited by common people.

    Amphi-theatre Copán
  • Tip Rating:
  • This area was large and enclosed by the pyramids around it. It appears to be a kind of amphitheatre similar to those in Rome. There are excavations still in progress in this part of the Copán complex.

The Pyramid over the Santa Rosa Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • This pyramid faces the area the Maya lived. Underneath this pyramid the Santa Rosa Temple has been excavated which can be reached through a series of tunnels.
