This view shows the grassy area away from the cluster of ruins. There are some displays of statues located here. I am unsure what the purpose of this area was in the time of the Mayans. Leave a Comment

Unlike Tikal, these ruins aren't famous for the fauna, vegetation, or architecture. On the contrary, Copan has some of the most well preserve Mayan murals and stellas known. The conditions of this site are amazing. I spend a good 5 hours in the site and the museum. Leave a Comment

Next to the stelae, there's the 'Hieroglyphs Stairs' which cannot be mounted (of course for preservation causes). I was a bit disappointed by the ruins and because of the distance you don't get to see the inscriptions very clearly. Leave a Comment

The stelae (remembrance stones) are the reason why you go to Copan. They are being protected from sun and rain. Leave a Comment

After two weeks exploring ancient mayan ruins from yucatan to guatemala I ended up in this small village in Honduras.Obviously the main reason was to visit the ruins of Copan.I was astonished to see them as apart from the major buildings and pyramids , quite similar to all the other I ve seen, there were some magnificent statues.Nowhere else you could see this wonder.Magnificently carved and full of colours are a must for a mayan tour as they are so particular and unique. Copan has developed into a destination that warrants anywhere from 2-3 days to a weeks visit. There are lots of activities and sights in the area! The ruins are fascinating from both a historical and artistic (amazing stone carvings!) perspective and the museum is well worth a visit to see the totally restored life size replica of a Mayan Temple. Once you’ve seen the ruins, you can go to the bird or butterfly sanctuaries, go horseback riding, see area villages and village life such as a pottery tour, take a plunge in the hot springs, or go tubing on the river. There are plenty of nature hikes, coffee plantation tours and for the very adventurous there are other activities like doing a Canopy Tour on zip lines (a blast!!) or exploring caves. So don’t come for a day... there’s way more to see and do in this undiscovered little gem. Address: Don Udos (Hotel & restaurant) have lots of info.Website: www.donudos.com
