 | Copán Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | Popular Tourist Traps | Other Tourist Traps Tips | All Tips (4) copan is only 10 minutes from the border of guatemala, yet you will need some lempiras if you plan to spend in copan (which you will of course). it is roughly 19 lempiras for US$1, but of course, that is very rough and will fluctuate. at the border, while your transport is stopped for the necessary documentation, you will get hoardes of men clambering around you to do some 'money dealing'. basically, you can agree on a fixed price, and give them some US dollars in exchange for lempiras. i dont know how legal this is, but everyone seems to do it, and the rate exchanged was not so bad at all. but be warned! you are out on the street, at a busy crazy dust border crossing. people are swarming around you. and here you are taking wads of cash out in public. be VERY careful, and pay attention to your surroundings.
if the thought of 'bartering' for an exchange rate fazes you, the village of copan does have a few banks and 2 ATM's. obviously bank fees etc will be in force if you go here, but at least its not feeling like 'dodgy' dealings on the street. Leave a Comment

Outside the gates are a couple of stores - more expensive than in town or farther from the ruins.

In Copan beware of young children swarming around the entrance to Copan and in the town of Santa Rosa de Copan. These children are capable of ripping off unsuspecting tourists. I bought a few things off them because I wanted them but please don't be tempted to give them extra cash or to buy something out of pity as they are often 'run' by adults who take all the money off them. Give them food perhaps. This picture is of the Central Square in Santa Rosa de Copan. Leave a Comment
