 | Isla de Roatán Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 7 of 7 | | Popular Tourist Traps | Other Tourist Traps Tips | All Tips (7) The taxi drivers will try to charge as much as think they can get. No meters no fixed rate except maybe a $10US minimum for gringos. The is supposed to be a notion of shared taxis but that seems only to apply to the locals
Negotiate the cost of the fare and try to bargain with a group of taxis waiting for a fare. Find a fellow gringo to share a taxi.
By far the best way to get around is by water taxi. Although the best way to get around is by water taxi at 25 lempira one way about $1.50 US between West Bay and West End. Next would be the public minibus but again here I think there are rates for locals and a separate set for gringos. But both these options stop after night fall. Or maybe alittle more risky rent a Car or motor cycle. Leave a Comment

I can not think of many traps except the taxis if you do not know the price. Remember it is ONLY $10 to just about any place on the island from the airport. Roatan is such a beautiful island where ever you view it from. Roatan is easy to pick out from space or on a map. Just look 35 miles north of Honduras and you will see it. Leave a Comment

Roatan, fortunately doesn't have any golf courses yet. I say fortunately because it is a telling sign if a place has a golf course. Nothing against golf, but it is a sign of high tourist volumes, which, while that can seem good for leisure or financial reasons, it also is bad for the island in that it is no longer a new, adventurous place, but a place that is been there, done that; for the tourist trade only, with little else. As seasoned travellers realise, beware taxi fares. As an example - the first offer I heard for the trip from the airport to West End was $15. As I walked away from the group outside the airport building, heading for the road and a "collectivo," somebody shouted after me 100 lempiras = about $6. Outside the airport I had an offer of $5. Then, a little later, with the driver of an admittedly ramshackle vehicle I agreed a price of 50 lempiras. I'm sure I could have gone lower, certainly by waiting for the minibus. ·
Bargain before the journey about the amount of a taxi fare. Walk out of the airport and hail a taxi on the road. ·

It's hard to think of Coxen Hole as a tourist trap, but it is becoming more and more so with cruise ships and touristos coming in. There are stores and stuff whose prices have gone up... grrr... thanks to tourists... grrr... Oh well.
Don't buy stuff? I dunno... they need the money, but i'm watching this island fall into the suntan-lotion-covered hands of tourists. Prices are going up, cheapo stores are going up to supply junk to tourists... at least I can still get two cokes for 17 lempiras... for a while... One of the islands' newest problems is traffic. Never before have there been as many cars... but today, and in the future...grrr
Go there, don't watse money there... the West End is cheaper for buying stuff, I think. Anyway, go into H.B. Warren and buy some soap or coke... or a sandwich.... or better yet, just drive in, park and walk around. Leave a Comment

well as soon as you set foot near any market / outdoor stores little kids will follow you and try to get you to buy stuff from thier frineds/families tents and not others and they somtimes follow very close and will try to steal your wallet and valuables . its not that bad but somthing to watch out for, the resort side of the island is beautiful and completly different as these merchants are not allowed on that side.

when you set a price for a Island tour, be specific in what places are you going to visit for that price.
At least, write down all the places and let the person that helps you or the driver to initialed it. Leave a Comment
