  • Money Exchange in Amapala

    Amapala Favorites

In its hey day, Amapala had plenty of banks, but not it has none, so come to the island prepared. However, if you need to change some dollars, go to a woman who owns a beverage distribution warehouse just a block up the main boulevard from the pier across from the Hey Mister disco club. Going up the hill from the pier, it will be on the right. Ask...

    Amapala Restaurants

There's a historic colonial era hotel in severe need of rehabilitation down on the waterfront, where a lot of motor taxis hang out. Despite it's run-down atmosphere, or perhaps because of it, this place is a major stop for breakfast and for those wanting to stock up on beer or bottled water on their way off the pier. We were recommended this place...

  • Seafood at the Waterfront

    Amapala Restaurants

Surprisingly, this is the only place on the waterfront in Amapala, and it's closed in the morning, but it's a great place for dinner, fortunately. We had jumbo shrimp sautéed garlic and olive oil. I drank a beer. Prices are reasonable.

  • Ride the Ferryboat to Amapala

    Coyolito Things to Do

Coyolito is the launch dock for boats going to various places on Isla El Tigre and even other islands in the Golfo de Fonseca. The easiest destination is Amapala on the Isla El Tigre.

  • Bargaining for the Ferryboat Ride

    Coyolito Transportation

The Coyolito-Amapala ferryboats are open boats with sun canopies that last about 15 minutes over the normally calm waters of the Golfo de Fonseca. Although prices are set, if you have 5 or more people, you may want to bargain with the boatman for the whole boat. Avoid paying too much, but it's cheap in any case. I can't even recall the price--150L...

  • Parking the Rental Car Before the Ferry...

    Coyolito Transportation

If you arrive by car in Coyolito, destine to Isla El Tigre, you will be parking your car in a secured covered lot. This is cheap and easy to do, but I recommend that you keep these issues in mind:1. There will be many parking vendors eager and rushing you into a deal. Stop, look at the beauty of the water, and then take your time as you bargain for...

  • Coyolito to Isle El Tigre

    Isla El Tigre Transportation

The only way I know of to get to Isle El Tigre is by the open passenger boat ferrys that shuttle people and belongings from Coyolito to various places on the Island, including the dock at Amapala. I do know that other boating trips in the Golfo de Fonseca can also be arranged, typically from Coyolito dock where the best supply of fuel for the boats...

  • Visit Amapala

Isla El Tigre Things to Do

See the separate pages for Amapala, but this is a colonial era town that was also the largest port in the Golfo de Fonseca until the 20th century. The weather here is more comfortable than on the mainland. Besides the run-down colonial architecture and pueblo plaza, there are good seafood restaurants.

  • Circumnavigate the Island

Isla El Tigre Things to Do

Its easy to hire a boatman for a ride around the island. We did so in the afternoon and found the best sunset photography on the Honduran trip. The volcanoes on the island are mostly dormant. You will see shrimp farming as part of the trip.

  • View the San Lorenzo from the Rooftop

    San Lorenzo Things to Do

We slept, dined, and then left San Lorenzo for the nearby island of El Tigre, so we didn't hang around much. However, we did talk to the resident parrot and take many photos from the rooftop.

  • Best Part of San Lorenzo

    San Lorenzo Restaurants

Located on the rooftop floors of the Hotel Villa Conch Mar, this place will surprise you with excellent service and food quality. I would stay away from the fresh leaf greens, but the fresh fruit juices and bar drinks are safe enough. The breakfast menu was typical eggs, refried beans, fresh juice, and coffee, all of which comes comparatively cheap...
