"Clothing Optional"

by BeGevt

Trip to Runaway Bay, Jamaica 5/30-6/5/07Basically all you need in Jamaica is a couple of swimsuits, maybe 2 or 3 Sarongs, and maybe some dresses for the club! There's no need to bring a whole bunch of miscellaneous clothing. Flip flops and a pair of swimshoes will suffice for your entire stay (unless your an absolute stiletto, high heels kind of girl like myself :-) Other things that you absolutely must bring are as follows:Camera, film, extra batteriesSunscreen plus bug repellantChapstick(dry cracked lips aren't cute)Flip-Flops, Swim shoesMultiple SwimsuitsCashDeodorant ;-) (gets hot ya, know? Lol)Save room in your bags for souvenirs, so that you won't have to pay extra for them to be flown or shipped back! Arriving and realizing I had way too much clothing and shoes! (I had about 2 or 3 outfits per day and I only stayed 6nights, 7days!!

Get away from the tourist traps!

I would take a newcomer into the interior of Jamaica and around the less developed south coast. Most visitors to Jamaica frequent the resort areas of the north coast, where you will pay more for everything and have a much less authentic experience. The people you will meet on the north coast will be street hustlers, your bartender, and your maid. The interior of Jamaica is beautiful and there are friendly people and good food everywhere. Staying in a hotel in Mandeville, which is a small city up in the mountians... being awakened on Sunday morning by a long note -- someone blowing into a conch shell to call people to church. Then a few minutes later hearing the lovely singing from the nearby church.I also miss the great food -- fish and bammy, jelly coconut, salt pepper shrimp, jerk pork and chicken, etc.

Need a hook up?

We have someone that helps us out everytime we go down there. he gets us a nice place to stay (house or condo) at jamaican prices ($200-400/month!) He goes shopping with us or for us and goes on trips with us to make sure everything is okay. he doesn't rip us off either. We usually give him a couple hundred dollars at the end of our trip...he saves us thousands. He is a Minister at a local church...took us there too....nice guy! Email me or leave a comment if you want the number.

Ocho Rios

by Astrobuck

Nice city...the cows walking along the side of the road are a nice touch (yeah, right). We stayed here for about a week at an all-inclusive resort, and it was great. We only stopped at a couple of places in Ocho Rios, but the stay there was well worth it. This is a great place to shop, because there isn't a lot of haggling that goes on here. Try the Taj Majal shopping center if you aren't into the haggling.

Hummingbirds

by kyoub

The one thing that will always stand out in our memories about our holidays in Jamaica is the time we spent at Rockland Feeding Station. We were sitting very quietly, with our finger extended on one hand and a small bottle of sugarwater in the other. Then to have a beautiful hummingbird land on your finger is heavenly.Even if you are not a birdwatcher, as I am, you will still enjoy this. I miss seeing all of the beautiful flowering plants and birdlife everywhere.

Please take a bamboo raft ride...

by Plookie

Please take a bamboo raft ride down the 'Martha Brea' river. Of course take it with your loved one. A great ride you won't forget. My fondest memory of the island is the Jamaicans I met. They disspelled all of the bad rumors about the islander's. I found the Jamaicans are very receptive to all of the tourist they meet. And they love taking you to their home for dinner....great food, and a fantastic time. Yes, there are some bad people on the island, just like here in the states. You just have to be aware of where you go, and hopefully you are with a group of people who will also remember the great days on the Island of Jamaica.

Jamaica no problem

by Pierangelo

Jamica is a magical Island! Inside you have mountains and hills for a beautiful landscape. If you go to Black River you can meet very close big crocodiles and then go to YS falls to jump with a liana inside water pools. In the sea there is also the reef with lot of rays and moray. The people is original, they have the past of slavery to forget so they like freedom above all. Despite, I have to regret a jamaican behavior that is an heritage of slavery: both girls and boy they sell their body. So the European women dream to have a love story with a jamaican muscular stallion is only an expensive business $$.Rasta is a religion, they belive in his holiness Bob Marley and the God in earth the Ethiopian emperor Aile Selassie. Marijuana is a way to join spiritual experiences like the shamans use of herbs. You have to respect their way to live and they respect you.

Tipping

by Dabs

When traveling to Caribbean or Mexican resort areas, having tour guides, bus drivers, hotel staff, etc. not so subtlely ask for tips is common practice. I suspect that tips are a large part of their income, so when I get good service I always make sure to tip them generously. On the other hand, I've been on enough of these types of vacations that if I don't feel like we've received good service that I don't feel obligated to tip. Some of the mega resorts in Jamaica have no tipping policies but believe me they will accept them if offered. One of our bus drivers even told us that if we wanted to tip him we should do it before we got back to the resort because the resort required employees who received tips to hand them over to the resort.
