Money matters

by Dabs

US $ are widely accepted down here, many times prices are both in Jamacian and US currency. If you are going off the beaten path, you may find that you will need Jamaican currency but the only place we used it was a fast food place. If you are using a private guide, they will take US currency, if you book trips through your resort they take credit cards. We stopped at a grocery store to buy some coffee, they also took US currency and their machines are set up to take it. But they will give you back change in Jamaican currency. If you are bringing USD, bring lots of small bills with you for tips for bus drivers, tour guides, bellmen, etc. and also for making purchases at the craft market. It's easier to negotiate if you are not flashing big bills around.

Don't Go!

by eee54ggg

I have been to Jamaica twice, once as a child and once as an adult. As a child, all I remember is the swimming pool and weaving a hat out of grass. Oh yeah, and an allergic reaction to something, but no matter. As an adult, I was primarily aware of the destitute poverty of the locals. It is difficult to enjoy yourself when people are constantly begging you to steal a hamburger from the hotel restaurant for their kids. The weather in December was warm but so windy we were not able to participate in any activities. Overall, there are much nicer places to see, much nicer beaches, and much better weather to be had.

Horrible Place

by latis

Jamaica is probably the worst place I have been to. The people are not trustworthy. They will be very nice, but expect payment for everything. You feel uneasy while you are here like someone will rob you if given half a chance. If you are set on going, at least stay at Sunset Beach, an all inclusive resort located in Montego Bay, just don't leave the grounds.

Booze cruises

by jessmorg

Meeting the japanese girls on the cruise and trying hard to rememebr all the japanese i knew. Lots of places offer a boat cruise with an open bar and sometimes they offere lunch or dinner.you can go on a catamaran or a pirate boatThis one was the calico pirate cruise. The boat staff was great. the captin brought his two kids along who got the dance party started. This was a really fun time.you can get the calico sunset cruises from Pier one in montego bay.

All info on Jamaica

Go to http://jamaicans.com/It has travel, recipes, culture forums for info on Jamaicans all over the world. There is even a dictionary to help those who struggle with the accent and slang used. It is often called patwa(sp) here.

Rastafari

by ultchuk

The reason for me to go to Jamaica was that I did a study on the Rastafarian Movement in Jamaica. I stayed there for about six months. The title of my thesis was "Echos out of Babylon" and was mainly concerned with the Bobo Dreads or Edwardites (named after Prince Edward Emmanuel). I will add more another time

It's the little things.

by Robinski9

Riding around the current pool on a rubber intertube. We did that a lot. We were first put off by how tiny and ROCKY the beach was but I heard a lot of beaches in Jamaica were ruined in a Hurricaine in 1989. However, the resort was so close to the water that you could easily see the water from you vantage at the pool. Very relaxing and no sand in embarrassing places. : When we arrived and were about to land. You could see to the very bottom of the water so far out from shore. There don't have pollution (at least not in Montego Bay). It was just lovely. The colors of are world have been destroyed by pollution. I noticed that when I flew back to Chicago.

Peter Tosh Memorial

by Steve-H

The last resting place of reggae hero Peter Tosh is a small tomb and memorial in the village of Belmont, just behind Kutters Place (excellent food, just one dish a day and if you arrive on fried chicken day you are in for a treat ) The occasional minibus full of tourists stops here, you have to be a fan really.

Dolphins Cove, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

by tpangelinan

Dolphin Cove , the swim with the dolphins was a dream come true, and so much fun! Worth every penny, take money to get lunch there, and buy pictures they take of you. The video is very expensive, $80.00. We swam on Mother's Day. It was pretty, and quiet that day. We had the buffet lunch for $12.95 per person. It was OK, resort food had us spoiled. Gift shop is loaded with dolphin-aila. Lockers are available.www.dolphincovejamaica.comDolphin Cove Ltd.P.O. Caribbean Sea

by Sunplip

The wonderful beaches, the white sand and of course the weather...as long as you dont go in the tropical rainy season! The highlight of this trip, was taking the horse into the sea and riding in the sea. It was a fantastic experince, and something i would love to do again and again. Most of the men who were dragged into going on this trip were not looking forward to it, but when it was over, they were crying out to go again. We were also taken out into wonderful hills and shown the most beautiful scenery. This is something anyone who goes to Jamaica should do.
