Quad nightclub: Top nightclub
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the busier nightclubs in town, it is frequented by locals and foreigners alike. There is a jazz bar on the ground floor which is very relaxed, and two floors of dancing upstairs. One floor tends to be predominantly Jamaican dance music and the other more mainstream.

The very top floor has a more intimate dance floor, and a small terrace which is pleasant to avoid the heat and which affords a pleasant view of Kingston by night.

Admission varies depending on gender and night of the week (there are ladies nights with free admission for females), but I think the most expensive night is $600J for males.

Security is tight and you will be required to go through a metal detector.

Pool Bar, Hilton hotel.: Early evening chillout.
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the early evening, many people both residents and non-residents go to the pool bar area in the hilton hotel complex. There is live music there seven nights a week , and you can have a relaxing drink whilst listening to various different kinds of music on different evenings.

There is a particularly good jazz group on a Monday and a traditonal Jamaican mento band one night in the midweek (I think it's Wednesday).

Friday is probably the most popular night with a karaoke, but that's not really my thing, and the standard of the "artistes" varies considerably.

The music finishes at ten o'clock, so go early. You can then retire to the Jonkanoo club (see seperate tip) upstairs, or sit in the pool bar until 0200

    The 'in' nightspots change...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The 'in' nightspots change pretty frequently, but Peppers (on Upper Waterloo Road) and the Grogge Shoppe at Devon House -- both outdoor/open-air bars -- are consistently good spots.

Nightlife in Kingston is a more formal affair than in the U.S. - especially at dance clubs. You probably won't be allowed into clubs wearing jeans, shorts, or sandals.

  • Tip Rating:
  • I went to Asylum in New Kingston and it was packed--mostly with Jamaicans. The music was almost entirely reggae, but they did mix it up with a little hip hip and calypso (and I really do mean a little).

Jonkanoo Club: A great little club
This nightclub is situated within the Hilton hotel complex, although is run separately as a franchise. The franchise has recently been taken over by a very pleasant Jamaican called Keith (he’s the one with the ponytail!) and his partner Keisha who is equally delightful. There are various themed evenings, which are only really getting off the ground. It is unfortunate that there are not more people (although it is early days) as the music policy is very good, at least to my taste.

The club has been extensively re-furbished following Hurricane Ivan and is pleasant inside with air-con.

If you’ve had a slight surfeit of reggae / dancehall / hip hop, you could do worse than go there on a Monday night, which is metal night. It is a type of music that is not particularly well catered for in Kingston, and so attracts a good crowd of fans. It is a very relaxed and fun atmosphere, although some of the clothing / hair combinations are a bit startling (or am I just getting old?)

Wednesday night is retro, playing a good selection of 80’s / 90’s soft rock and pop. It will undoubtedly be better when word gets around and more people come, as they inevitably will.

Thursday night is probably the most popular night, which is Latin American. People who obviously know how to dance turn up, mostly dressed for the occasion, although rank amateurs like myself are also very welcome.

The club opens at 2200 when the main pool bar entertainment stops, and stays open according to the crowd. Monday and Thursday can go until about 0400. Jason, the barman, makes arguably the best rum punch in Kingston, so you may find yourself staying there longer than you intended to. The club is open to non-residents and admission varies from $100J on Monday to $500J for Latin night.

Smart casual. Jeans ant trainers allowed. On metal night, just about anything goes.!

    Kingston-wide: Nightlife dangers
Be careful walking back to your vehicle late at night. A co-worker was mugged when doing so around 2am in Kingston.

The Platinum is an adult night club, full with girls from russia, ukrania and so on....taking a "private dancing" is very very cheap, and the girls are the most beautifull ones in the world....no kidding....well, they also dance naked and fool around with the other girls....

    Emancipation Park: Catch a show

Presumably they put on shows here often as there is a permanent stage set up in the middle of the park. The first night we arrived there was a good local reggae band that played here, wich as I later found out, turned out to be a good coincidence...

The music scene in Jamaica has undergone drastic changes of late, and reggae is no longer what it once was. These days what dominates Jamaican airways are such artists as 'Beenie Man' and 'Elephant Man' with their Jamaican blend of hip-hop/rap. Since I am not at all a fan of these styles of music, this is why I say it was a good coincidence.

    Weekends.: Clubs!
This is sort of an outdoor spot; Quad is closed on Thursday night and Asylum doesn't pop off til after 11 pm, so this is often the best option.

Tony Matterhorn randomly showed up when I was there, which was awesome.
