 | Port Antonio General Tips | Tips 1 - 4 of 4 | | Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (4) The Port Antonio Community is seeking to support local development as it struggles for tourism in competition with the "all-inclusive gated-resort" message that is so well ingrained in the Jamaican marketing message. A beautiful area like Port Antonio is considered "too unsafe" for tourists and this message is being reinforced by the large resorts on the island. Tourists are told not to leave the resort area because the hotel can't guarantee their safety. What a shame... what a sham! By working as a community to build a different image and message about Jamaica that includes exploring the countryside, enjoying and supporting the parks and other nature activities, and mostly about meeting the locals, Port Antonio will enchant visitors. Development happens when the community supports it and when its members are respected as important to the industry.

At Port Antonio there isn't mass tourism. East of the town there are some expensive holiday villages and private residences. Now they are trying to promote the tourism and organized tours on the Rio Grande, when you can sail down the river rafting for three hours. I didn't do it, but it has to be a wonderful experience by hearsay.
Just one week on holiday and so much to see! I missed many things I would like to do in this place, like to raft the Rio Grande, visit Navi Island, go to see the Somerset Falls... Never mind, I'm sure to come back sooner or later! Leave a Comment
