A striped jeep and a nice man named Gene Lilly provided me with the opportunity to photograph the beautiful people and mountain scenery of Jamaica. We had the time of our life on this tour. I had two cameras, one bw, one color, and also a digital and I took 3 rolls of film in each. The children climbing their way home from school in neatly pressed uniforms, the beautiful cold lagoon water racing over our sweaty tired bodies, the 100 year old jokes told by our driver, Gene and the bumpy ride over roads most Americans wouldn't even rate as ditches ... memories I hope my mind is never to old to relive. In 2003, we are taking another tour - it will he hard to ever match the wonders and the closeness of this one. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see more than just a bunch of people climbing a waterfall!

Very Distict and Attractive Waterfall that starts at the top of a 1000 foot mountain and ends right on the beach!!

To start it off there are security guards all over the entrance. Hell, there are security guards all over the place in Jamaica. They are literally everywhere. TRUST ME, You are Safe.

To begin, it is 10$ into the park. On the walk down you pick up a guide. Ours for the day was Howard Haye. He was a very nice chap and very much into his job.
Alot of the guides there do not get paid other than the tips they get so remember them. They will also let you know to remember them.

We bagan with a small hike down the mountain to the Beach where the Falls end. There your guide who has gathered a good crowd of people begins his speecha bout safety, Your guide will also carry your Digital Camera for you and take pictures of you and your partner, believe me they have done this enough that it will not get wet.

From there you are told to hold hands, everyone, and begin your climb. IT IS SLIPPERY NOW AND THEN. DO NOT GET OVERCONFIDENT, AS I DID. These are very powerful waters!!! BTW, The River Water is FECKIN' COLD!!!

When you get to the first landing your guide will point out many of the different areas and small water slides and wading pools. You get to stop for a whle and relax in the water or even play around a bit.

We have climbed 200 ft vertically and still have 800 to go!! Howard was very informative, and helped everyone at all of the few "WaterSlides". He was a very FUN person and really got the tourists into it.

Near the end of our climb, we got to take a break and Howard went around and talked to everyone in the group. It was a very personable experience thanks to him.

I definitely recommend Going!!! And if you can find him. I supremely recommend Howard Haye as your guide his Pic is here.

    Climbing Up Dunn's River Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Although it's in every guide book, there is nothing to describe this experience, other than YOU MUST climb the falls at least once in your life!

First, you walk down quite a few flights of step down to the ocean. At the bottom, you emerge upon the most beautiful beach! Many locals come here just for this.

Then it's time to climb up the falls. Everyone joins hands in a "human chain", and several guides take you on up. The water is pretty cold, and you will get soaked. Don't wear anything that will be harmed by sea water. Be sure to wear watershoes or at least shoes with rubber soles, as it can be slippery!

It's quite a climb, but you won't notice it, as it is somewhat gradual. The guides will take pictures of you in the falls, so be certain you have a waterproof camera.

Very awesome, and definitely worth the $10 admission fee!

You just have to get out of the resort and meet the people! They are so friendly and the children in their school uniforms are so adorable.

Did you know that parents in Jamaica must pay for everything ... uniform, books, supplies, etc ... in order for their children to get an education? Some of their parents make less than $100 US a month and it costs close to $50 US just for the uniform. Makes you appreciate the free public education system in the US.

    Snorkeking & Scuba Diving
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you like to SCUBA, you are going to love the all included dives at Runaway Bay. We got in about 8 dives in 6 days and snorkeled every morning. They provide all the equipment and it is all included. Ebbi and Richie were our Divemasters and they were great! The picture is one of our favorites - an anemone.

    Dunn's River Falls
The falls are a series of moderately sized falls that you can climb. Along the way their will be guides to take your pictures and help you get through the trek. Its beautiful scenery and is something that everyone in the area should do once (as is evidenced by the amount of people you'll see there).

Make sure to take a good pair of reef shoes. They rent them there but I consider renting shoes second only to renting a tooth brush.

For an even more fun way to do the tour look at my next tip.

    Glistening Waters
It's a strange and pleasant sensation, swimming in dark water, that, with our movements brights with a strong green color. The reason is an algae that, when agitated turns luminescent.
The short ride for the nearby port, even with the courtesy drink is expensive - US $20.

    Nudist beaches
It seems that they are common in Jamaica, but we were not attracted. Our hotel had one, as usual in the most remote section of the coast. It was close to the most beautiful area of the beach, but not suitable to swim due to the reefs.
