We ate almost all our meals at the hotel restaraunt.Breakfast and Dinner were on the meal plan and served buffett style. The food and staff were terrific ! Jerk chicken or jerk pork and the sweet mangos at breakfast.

If you are staying with family / friends...dont even THINK about going out to eat...THATS the ultimate insult in my experience...enjoy the personal touch! June plum... really lovely, never seen even in W.Indian markets in Manchester. The advocado's are super fantastic as are the mango's , bigger and more gorgeous than you can believe. Be careful that you don't get hit by flying coconuts...it does happen...and they are hard remember!

Great food: Curry goat, Rice and peas, Ackee and Saltfish, 'drops' (coconut, sugar), you must try a stick of sugar cane, its really refreshing. Coconuts in their jelly form (I actually prefer them hard, much to my Jamaican friends disgust), June plum, BIG Avocado, Red snapper, sweet potato, 'soup', green banana, yam, , shave ice, hard dough bread, carrot juice, guiness punch...the list goes on.. loads of wonderful home grown fruit / veg...Note for the kiddliwinks...you will NOT get sweets and chocolate like you do if you live in the UK, or any other countries where we eat too much rubbish...You will however, get crisp type stuff and lots of fizzy drinks... not incredibly refreshing, but when you are parched and boiling you will kill for a cold..anything..:)

by Steve-H

Any wooden shack on the beach with a boat behind it, the seafood is excellent.cheap-cheap-cheap! but then I was in the countryside, at the resorts expect to pay a premium. Lobsters are plentiful and cost only a few $J. I am a fan of chilli peppers so any spicy Jamaican dishes were fine by me. Try the 'jerk chicken' or fried fish. Vegitarians will do well here as a lot of the population are veggies and all the food is organic, grown either in the yard or up on the nearby hills (wherever you are in Jamaica there is a hill nearby) Go for the breadfruit, yams and okra. Try the dumplings and dont worry if you are offered an 'Irish' its a potato, but oh! those peppers and pepper sauces...mmmmmmm!

S_J_Miller's Restaurant Tip

by S_J_Miller

Jamaica's food reflects its motto'Out of many, one people'with distinctive contributions from each of the groups to have peopled the island, and though it's never made great strides overseas, the local cuisine is undeniably good. From fiery jerk meat, probably the island's best-known culinary creation, to its inventive seafood and ubiquitous rice and peas, the national diet is surprisingly varied. Snacking is good, too, with patties the staple fare, and there is a vast selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Outside Kingston and the north-coast resorts, international eating options are limited, although you will find pizza and Chinese restaurants in most towns.

by yourkidding

We had the best native foods from small vendors on the island, but for seafood we loved the setting and thought the food was fantastic (although pretty expensive!) at Marguerite's in Montego Bay. From the chargrilled calamari to the tequila shrimp and something called nature's bounty or something like that everything was terrific..

We opted for the $30 weekly meal plan. Although you often couldn't see what you were eating, we all survived the week and managed to save a lot of $$$. If you opt for a plan like this, expect to eat a lot of jerk. Appleton Rum - and those who served it!Daiquiris, Marguiritas, any fruity tropical drinks...

Rick's Cafe, Negril - a great little hideaway at the end of the Negril Road, with spectacular views of the cliff jumpers, an emerald tidal pool, good food, a lively bar...and a great place for legendary sunsets

I don't have the name. I recommend to all the people who want to go in jamaica: The negrill beach. Many restaurant and disco outside. But in Mo'Bay)MMontago Bay) it's so good too.Price is low. Atmosphere beautiful. The typical restaurant is, i think one of a best thing for discover jamaica. Chicken, Rice, Fish, i have never eat in a hotel. I have eat in the small restaurant in the beach or in the street.

Pickled Parrot and Rick's Cafe...

by donarumr

Pickled Parrot and Rick's Cafe in Negril on the cliffs have to share this honor for informal fun and photo ops. These are not the best dining, but can't be beat for cliff diving, rope swings, sunsets, and happy hour partying.Expensive but fabulous is 'Xtabi'. The cliffs! The panoramic view! The other friendly tourists. Don't be afraid to talk to strangers! The locals are terrific, too...every year we add new friends who recognize us the following year! Go ahead and jump off the cliffs...there are ledges at different heights for varying degrees of courage (or idiocy) The food really doesn't matter, you might even forget to eat with so much to watch ( and drink! ) Generally though stick with seafood or chicken everywhere. Beef is hard to find and I never saw a well fed cow in this country. The lobster and local catches are outstanding and so is the jerk chicken. Don't forget to wash it...
