Our vacation was supposed to be a week in Runaway Bay. Well, it was, but with many escapes and visits, as mentioned in myRunaway Bay´s page and other.

I only knew that we have been in Lucea when, arriving in Portugal I tried to find in the map the location of Palladium hotel. The hotel was all that I saw, and without sorrow - it was a great couple of days, as I mention in my Lucea´s page.

Everybody in Jamaica descends a river in a bamboo raft. We did it too, in Great River. No emotion at all, just a calm sliding down the river, with timw and peace of mind to watch the beautiful vegetation, with the explanation of the gentle rafter.Rafting, however, was already described in my Runaway Bay's page

Fernanda hesitated, but, having read something about this falls I insisted to go. Well, it was, no doubt, the funniest hour of our vacations.Dunn's River falls, are described and shown in my Ocho Rios page

Of course, most travelers go to Jamaica to enjoy the sun and sea. It is nice to relax on a beach and sip tropical drinks. Most of the large resorts are situated right on the beach, and offer all sorts of water sports and activities. One of the most popular beaches in Montego Bay is Doctor's Cave Beach. It is named for Doctor Alexander James McCatty who owned the beach in the early 1900s. At that time, the beach was accessible through a cave, but unfortunately it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932. In 1906, the doctor donated his beachfront property to a private club which eventually became the Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, the beach's current owner. Doctor's Cave Beach became popular among rich socialite Europeans and Americans in the 1920s after Sir Herbert Barker, a British osteopath, published an article claiming that the waters have curative powers, as they are fed by mineral...

We booked a day exersion out to Dunn's River Falls through the Ritz. They picked us up on a bus, and then had to go to a few more stops to pick up more people. This part took a while, since each group had to be found- a lot of people were not waiting for the bus. We finally got underway, and it took a little over an hour to get there. Apparently they have redone the roads to Ocho Rios, from Rose Hall it didn't take as long as we thought it would. The downside in going in a big group like this is that you don't get to stop and just relax on the falls. This is such a beautfult sight to see, but the guides kept pushing us to keep going. It was like he couldn't get us up the falls fast enough. We would stop and relax in a few pools while we waiting for the stragglers to catch up, but that is it. I could have spent all day here. This is not a trip for someone that is unbalace, pregnant, or...
Jamaica has several scenic waterfalls. YS Falls is on the southern end of the island and because it is far removed from the larger resort areas, it gets a fair amount of locals.Besides the waterfalls, there is a 'zip line' that runs above the falls. There was rain the night before, so the water was a bit murky. We had fun just the same.

If you go to Ochorios you NEED to go here. I can't remember the number, but along this highway is the densest population of ferns in the world. And the falls are incredible. They are not steep, and you can climb them and play in them. There are locals and travelers all mixed in, and they end in a nice large pool that you can wade around in.
A visit to Jamaica without music is just not complete. The history of music in Jamaica is rich and extends both before and beyond reggae. (I found the section on music in the 'Rough Guide to Jamaica' surprisingly good.) Catching samples ofall the different styles would be difficult on the street or in clubs because what is popular today is what is played today. If you stay at a resort perhaps you will find that it has one of those Disney-theme-park type reviews of country music, but the quality is unlikely to come close to a performance like that put on by the group from the University of the West Indies. (See separate tip for nightlife.) As an alternative or for a cheap entrance into the world of Jamaican music, you might enjoy going into a music shop or two and start by asking a few questions. Like, "What is your favorite Jamaican music?" or "What is SKA?" or "What came before reggae?
As is frequently the case with river trips, the nature of a rafting trip 8 miles down the Jamaican Rio Grand (In the Portland area) probably varies considerable depending on the time of year. (Two people cost $75 to $40 USD plus tip for the "captain" depending on the time of year, number of people going and your ability to negotiate.) In June, this was a relaxing slow 2 and one half hour restful exposure to the sun. The water was amazingly clear. It was cooler than the ocean and quite refreshing for a quick dip or swim. The scenery was pleasant with almost no trash or other distraction. The rafts seemed to be just like those used in Southern China except wire was used rather than 'vines' to hold the bamboo together. The "captain" poles the raft from front. Our "captain" had been doing this for ten years. The six years before he worked poling rafts back up the river and thus earned the...
