Bob Marley's Hometown

by punkpin

9 Mile, Bob Marley's birthplace and final resting place is about 1 1/2 hours from Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay. Do not take your children there. You will park on the street and then enter into a fenced area. I saw a number of little hands (young Jamaican kids) sticking under the fence, holding out joints and hoping people would buy them. In front of me was a child that was about 5 years old. He started walking towards one of the little hands that was calling him over. My boyfriend started yelling and got the parents attention. Please don't take your children there.

Fire on Water

by punkpin

There is a little spot about 20 minutes from Ocho Rios that is known as Fire on Water. It is basically a small pool with some bubbles. The bubbling area can be lit on fire. The guys that work there will let you light it and walk through it. They also wet the towels with the water and heat them on the fire and then they give you a bit of a massage. It's very nice.

Martha Brae rafting ---for chilling out!

by crazyman2

Do this!It is so relaxing..... I'd been before, many years ago... but this time it was even better! We disembarked at Ocho Rios and then took a small coach to the Martha Brae river. En route we stopped for a beer/ coffee etc. Look at the photos! Then we arrived at the rafting centre and grabbed a rum punch (weak!) and climbed onto our raft. Each one holds two people and a punter. He poles the bamboo raft along the river and talks about the flora and fauna until the hour (?) long trip is up. There's plenty of banter between the raft captains. Sometimes the guys sing, hum or whistle quietly. Each Jamaican will take your photo for you and may later try to sell you pots etc from a sack. Of course they are expensive! As you draw near to the landing station your photo will be taken by an employee. These photos are okay but they are expensive ---$10 I think. The whole of the river experience is...

Doctor's Cove

by hc_90

If you don't like the little beaches at Royal Decameron, then you can enjoy the long beach at Doctor's Cave. Admission is $5 for adults. I forgot the cost for children. Costs $5 each for beach chair, umbrella, and snorkling equipment. We got umbrella only and it was sufficient. The beach also provided food and beverage service but we didn't order anything. The beach had no coral and best of all no vendors.

Negril

by toonsarah

I have read quite a lot about Negril on VT, both positive and negative. I have to say that we liked it, while not being blind to its shortcomings I hope. We stayed at the Negril Escape, in the southern part of town known confusingly as the West End, where the coastline is rocky and the hotels perched on the low cliffs. You have a choice in Negril of staying in this area or down by the beach. If you want to spend most of the time on the sand then the latter is the better choice, but we’re only occasional beach people and preferred the funkier atmosphere of the West End.We also went on a number of tours from our base in Negril. The highlight was the Rocklands Hummingbird Sanctuary, but all were enjoyable in different ways. Rather than lots of small pages with just one tip, I’ve grouped all my western end of the island “Things to do” on my separate Negril page, as they’re all easily reached...

Kingston

by toonsarah

Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, is situated on the south coast of the island, and is where many travellers first arrive, as we did (although Montego Bay Airport is perhaps more used by those on package holidays).Although we didn’t stay in Kingston, we were able to spend a full day there and in the vicinity. Setting off from Ocho Rios early in the morning, and with a stop for breakfast en route, we travelled through the scenic Bog Walk Gorge to our first stop in Spanish Town, the island’s first capital when under Spanish rule. From here we travelled into Kingston itself and along the Palisadoes to the small fishing community of Port Royal, founded by the British when they captured Jamaica from Spain in 1655. Our other main stop in Kingston was at the former home of Bob Marley, now a museum and major tourist draw. Commercialised it may be, but we really enjoyed our visit. After lunch we...

Ocho Rios

by toonsarah

This was the first of the two towns we stayed in on our visit to Jamaica (the second being Negril). We chose to come here because we heard it was well-located for excursions, rather than because the town itself had anything particular to offer, and I think that’s a fair assessment. However, we did find one absolute gem in the town itself: our wonderful B&B, the Blue House. While the town itself has little in the way of attractions, there are a handful on the outskirts – in particular, the much-visited Dunn’s River Falls and Dolphin Cove. There are also several beaches (we liked Reggae Beach, a few miles out of the town), some shopping complexes aimed mainly at the cruise ship passengers who descend on the town almost daily, and the inevitable craft market.Ochi (as the locals call it) does indeed make a good base for excursions. We had a day out in and around Kingston, and also visited...

Black river

by iam1wthee

This trip is very similar to the swamp trips that you take in Louisianna. You see a few crocodiles, egrets, mangroves. The only difference is the scenery is more beautiful. I recommend doing this with a private driver rather than a tour bus.

YS Falls

by iam1wthee

Similar to Dunns River where you have a wet side and a dry side that you can climb. You have the option to swing on ropes, zip line, and river tubing. A trolley meets you at the entrance and takes you past the farm on the premises. Most tours leave from Negril to go here The long trip and some of the roads are rough. Many times there are no bathrooms on the bus and they will not stop so go with a private driver.

Horse riding in the Jamaican sea

by luckiday

Why not try horse riding in Jamaican in the Caribbean sea. I absolutely loved this experience. It is about a 2 hour ride, part through the Jamaican countryside and part in the Caribbean sea. We rode at chukka cove which is not far away from Run away bay. I have ridden a few times but I am far from being an expert, and there were children and adults who had never ridden before. It's an absolute must if you go to Jamaica, YOU WILL LOVE IT!!
