Chilling out: rafting

by crazyman2

We're talking about a large bamboo raft with a double seat! We're talking about being punted along the river by a local! We're talking about enjoying a beer on the trip....Go into the mountains and enjoy this unique experience. As always, it's best to go early to avoid the tourists!Watch out for the hard luck stories to gain an extra large tip.

Spend a day at Doctor's Cave Beach

by american_tourister

This is the best beach in Jamaica. It is a private beach and because fo this the locals wont pay the entrance fee as it is $5.00 US. It is a tourist beach but is white sand, small surf, clear water and has every amenity you need such as a 1st Class bath house, restaurant with beach service, shops, etc. The history of the beach can be accessed by the weblink below. We talked our friends into going instead of an expensive excursion from the cruise ship. We had three children ages 2-6 with us and they had a blast. I took T-Man out snorkeling as the coral heads are only about 100 feet out. The coral was really batttered in 2005 by four hurricanes so it was nice to see it coming back. All in all it was our best day out.

Waterfall swim

by epatton714

West end of Island near Negril is a waterfalls swimming area and tourist destination. I hope I have the name right. I think it's Walker's falls. Since there is a lot of rain in Jamaica most of the year, there are many falls that one can visit in the foothills. Jamaica is best traveled with a reliable personal guide and driver. We get picked up by Patrick in his Volkswagen van at the Montego Bay airport and he takes us down to Negril for one of our many favorite cliffside hotels. My daughter has all the contact names but you can find many of the Jamaica travel sites with references to guides, drivers, etc.. We stayed in one villa at the "Catch a falling star" that had a sign on the bungalow "Bob Marley slept here-1976".Also liked Rick's Restaurant in the Negril area.

Appleton Rum Factory

by locallylegendary

This place was great. You first go in to their bar, and get some free Rum Punchs, and than take the tour. In the end of the tour, the tour guide will put out bottles on the bar, and its a free for all. All you can drink Open Bar of the Appleton drinks. After that, you can buy their alcohol from their gift shop. A reccomendation though, buy your drinks at duty free shops at the airport going home. They will tell you its more expsensive, but, that is not true at all. After the trip, everyone on the bus was pretty wild. So, fun times it was.

Golf

by DJMist

If you stay at Sandals Ocho Rios you can play all the golf you want to for free. A shuttle will take you our to the course and put you on. Setting up a tee time is appreciated. Note that while the golf is free you must play with a caddie who will expect a tip. The course suggests $10 but you can make that call. Frankly, my guy was so helpful to my game and entertaining conversation to boot I gave him much more. We only played once during the week as there was so much to do. The course was beautiful but not terribly challenging. The resort has a room to store your clubs and the course as extra spikes, tees, balls, etc.

Bike Ride

by DJMist

We took a bike ride led by a tour group. The group was led through the home of Sir Noel Coward, an actor, playwright, and composer during the early 20th century. Coward lived his later life here. He died and was buried here also. The home is interesting enough, but the view over looking the north coast of the island is even better. The tour also makes a stop at a typical Jamaican farm. Most of the crops are fruits. The fields are not grown in the typical rowed tillage that is found in industrialized agriculture. It looks labor intensive but we got to sample some of the fruit, including things I had never heard of before, right off the tree. I would highly recommend this excursion - booked at Sandals for $14/person.

Must see's in Jamaica

by VictoriaCampbell

Definitely take a sailing trip to Dunns River Falls for a once in a lifetime walk up a waterfall.Creating a human chain, climb the slippery slopes (I fell twice laughing the whole way) to the top. But don't forget to have your photo taken at the lower part in the middle of the waterfall. Wonderful keepsake. The Red Stripe sailing excursion was the high light on my trip.

Mayfield Falls with Barrett Adventures

by shargurl

We booked a private tour with Barrett Adventures, it's the best thing we've ever done. Our tour guide, Chester, met us at the pier when we disembarked. Little did we know we were the only ones going. He took us in a van to Mayfield Falls, which was located in the heart of Jamaica. We drove through the hills, which can be quite scary, the roads were narrow and we were driving on the left side. When we finally reached our destination, we were escorted with another private tour guide and our very own photographer! We felt like royalty! The falls were awesome, we were the only ones there. We swam underneath a little tunnel (quite safe) and we sat behind a little cove BEHIND the falls. Awesome adventure.

Blue Mountain Biking

by cyprus4holidays

A great day out for all the family, although be prepared for around a 12hr day....Pick up is by coach from your accommodation then collect from various hotels before setting off. There is a breakfast stop along the way.The bus then climbs upwards and above the cloud level, eventually reaching your destination around midday where you collect your bike, knee & elbow pads and helmet. After a ride of about 40 minutes, there is a lunch stop at a restauraunt overlooking the cliff edge.Coast most of the way downhill, there is some pedalling but nothing too strenuous. Your legs will ache through keeping the pressure on the back pedals as a brake though.

Green Grotto Caves

by mwenn2100

After being extremely disappointed visiting caves in Barbados, I decided to give this one a try anyway (plus, my travel companions really wanted to go!) These caves were formed out of limestone, and were used as hiding places by pirates and runaway slaves. There are many rock formations, stalagtites/stalagmites, pools, etc.Your group will be given a guide that will take you through the cave system and (hopefully) provide you with great historic information. Our guide was very informative and willing to wait until everyone saw what he was pointing out. You will be required to wear a hard hat and be prepared to do some walking while hunched over! The first chamber you are taken into is a huge cave with a stage in the back. We were told that it used to be used as a night club... there was graffiti everywhere and I could imagine people coming down to the cave for a night of live music and...
