Ocho

by katchow

The local craft market in Ocho is a major tourist trap. These ppl will sell there mother to make a sale. If you don't mind being constantly asked to "come over here pretty lady" go. There are a lotta bargains to be had. Be sure to BARTER! the price is always lower at the next stall.

it's not jamaican ganja you're smoking

by iriegal

As all of U know,it's hard to have a walk on the marvellous beach of Negril without being proposed something to smoke what is to be understood as lots of Jamaicans live on tourism and sell all and nothing. But if U think U gonna smoke real jamaican one , U're wrong. Most of the ganja in Jamaica grows in the jamaican land but the seeds they're using come from...HOLLAND. I got it from the mouth of a bushman still producing the original organical one that Bob used to smoke, the meditation one.It looks quite different from others and takes 8 months to grow instead of the 3, 4 of the others. 80% of the jamaican ganja comes from dutch seeds..Ya man

Legal drugs.....not really

by noaharc

When arriving in Jamaica I was almost immediately approached and asked if I wanted to buy drugs. In Jamaica, the use, sale, and possession of drugs such as ganja (marijuana), cocaine, crack, ecstasy, heroin and any other controlled substance is ILLEGAL. Violators are subject to severe punishments – specifically arrest, fine and imprisonment. DO NOT attempt to purchase, use, consume or transport ANY drug. If there is someone trying to sell you drugs, be firm and say NO! Incarceration is not a pleasant way to extend your holiday – you really don’t get much sightseeing done from behind the bars of a prison! A simple no, or as I found was effective was to tell them that your involved with law enforcement in the states. This will usually get them to back off and leave you alone.

Watch out for Voodoo sales people on the beach

by Ariannrhod

Wanting to talk with the locals is what I always do-but it is virtually impossible to do so since you get harassed pretty much everywhere you go on the beach.....We were told that a curse was put on us because we did'nt want to buy whatever this guy was selling.... this kind of freaked me out! Just keep walking say no thanks and don't make too much eye contact.....I hate to say this but it is the only way to get by without the hassle,if you wanna relax and do your own thing you must follow this rule

Dunns River Falls

by Chadbowers

The Dunns River Falls is a lot of fun, HOWEVER, when your visit is over be sure to leave the Park through the entrance. DO NOT FOLLOW THE EXIT SIGNS. It takes you through an area where all the merchants harass you to buy JUNK. They are very forward and do not respect the words No Thank You. I even bought a $10 bag of Coffee from one merchant to be nice and he turns and tries to screw me by quickly (10 seconds) carving my wifes name into a wooden statue while I'm paying for the coffee and says I owe him $40 for it. A BIG MESSS that will ruin your visit.

Dunn's River Falls

by Dabs

Although Dunn's River Falls may be one of the most beautiful spots in Jamaica, it suffers from over tourism. Many cruise passengers visit Dunn's on day trips from both Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, it may very well be the #1 day trip from the resorts so I imagine there is always a crowd. We visited Dunn's on our first trip to Jamaica in 2002 on an excursion with a mini bus full of people. We engaged in the obligatory hand holding up the falls, in our group was a woman who was not physically able to climb the falls (she got out at the first place she could), a man who climbed the falls in his blue jeans (imagine what they weighed at the end) and several people that had ill fitting shoes that were constantly floating back down the falls. On our recent trip to Jamaica (Feb 2005), Dunn's River Falls was included with our resort package so we decided to go again. This time we were there on a non...

Ocho Rios

by tahoesasha

The ride from Kingston to "Ochi" through Fern Gully is well worth it, but the Ocho Rios Falls is kinda sketchy. It's a rock-laden waterfall in the woods that you can climb up and around. Gets very touristy in summer, filled with spring breakers also, and you can easily slip and fall on the rocks and you are far far away from any medical help. On that side of the island, however White River Reggae Bash is a major highlight. The exact location can be found on a web search.

Dunn's River Falls

by Island_luv

These falls are one of the best known places in Jamaica (for good reason, they're beautiful)but because of that they are pretty much ALWAYS crowded. If you're seeing it, be prepared for the never ending streams of tourists. GO EARLY!

Ocho Rios Shopping

by mdchachi

Unless you're into haggling the shopping can be tiring. Ubiquitous craft items include tropical clothing, wood carvings and straw baskets. I didn't find the vendors as troublesome as I had read. A smile and a friendly 'no thanks' was enough to keep them at bay. If you keep walking out of their territory they'll quickly leave you alone. For world-class local products you can't go wrong with Blue Mountain Coffee and Sangster's Rum. Try the Cream Rum -- it's superb. For your reference the coffee was $29/pound at our hotel but we found it for $14/pound in town. For the Cream Rum, we paid $11 per 700ml bottle and $2.25 per 200ml bottle in Ocho Rios at a place called Gem Palace. At the airport it was $12 for the 700ml bottle and $2 for the 200ml bottle so next time I'd probably just wait and buy the alcohol at the airport. The coffee, however, was more expensive at the airport. By the way it...

Roadside Shops

by Astrobuck

As you get on the shuttle from MoBay enroute to Ocho Rios, the driver will stop at a place on the side of the road where there are restrooms, food, and drink. What he doesn't tell you is that there are a few shops there. When the bus stops, the locals gather around the door of the bus just waiting for you to get off. As you exit the bus, one of them will approach you and say, "Welcome to Jamaica! We have some pipes over here if you are interested in taking a look. Come! I will show you." (This happened to me, by the way). Just politely say, no thank you and walk off. They will be persistent, but DO NOT give in. Remember, these "pipes" are illegal in the US! There are other things there besides pipes, so use your discretion if you want to go and look. Try not to go alone. Like I said before, if you are not interested, just say "no thank you." and walk away. This goes not only for this...
