Montigo Bay

by slawekjb

Montigo Bay is one of them.Under the current sitiuation the town has very little to offer. Privacy is scarce. At the time when we went there, only 3 day-time beaches were safe to go and they closed at 5 PM. Fences don't keep away local marauders/houlligans as they will approach you even in water, selling petty stuff or asking for money - not willing to do anything for it. Smile and walk away from all intruders...shake a hand if it might buy you a piece of quiet. To enjoy Jamaican beach life, go to Negril.

Waiting for the Sunset

First time of our visiting to Negril for seeing most beautiful Sunset, after2 hrs. of waiting we've seen this Sunset. So if you're coming to Negril just for watching the SUNSET you might be disappointed.

Shops along Glouster Ave

by travelbugcheri

expensive and the stuff they sell (with the exception of anything that says Jamaica on it) can be bought anywhere (like home) for 100% less. You might find some great crafts and such, and memrobila like that is precious, but for the most part, big rip off Falmouth market, guys on the beach (haggle them down 30%)

Montego Bay Craft Market

by travelbugcheri

If you want to be bugged, harrassed and feel guilty about not parting with your hard earned money (at crazy prices) then go here! Get in and get out. You can buy some unique things there, but your gonna pay! Go to the Wednesday market in Falmouth. This place is for locals, but it's cheaper and you can bargin, use this rule of thumb ...Bargin down about 30%, pay in US dollars if you can (make sure you know the value)

Dunn's River Falls - Tourist Trap or Must See?

by bkathryn

I'm not sure whether to call this a 'tourist trap' or a 'must see activity' - it's really both! Dunn's River Falls - it's 3 km (2 mi) west of Ocho Rios and is Jamaica's best-known attraction. You might as well forget about trying to avoid the crowds here and just join the daisy chain clambering up the tiers of limestone that stairstep 180 m (600 ft) down to the beach in a series of cascades and pools. The water is refreshingly cool and the falls are shaded by tall rainforest. [Thanks to Lonely Planet - Jamaica] It's really a pretty cool thing to do, in spite of being the thing that everybody does!

Breezes Montego Bay. The place is overpriced and the accommodations would be beneath the standards of a Motel 6. Security is also completely lacking as the resort is open to the entire community in the evenings and people are allowed to roam around the premises without any security. Not a good idea for single women traveling alone, as my friend and I did.

The Sandals resorts are nice, but very much tourist inspired. The main theme always seems to be an American style party. If I were going back I would look for something off the main trail. There are lots of smaller hotels.

Do not buy liquer from the hotel shops. The duty free shops are much less expensive. On the other hand, we got a much better exchange rate at our hotel when we changed money than we got at the airport.

In Ocho Rios, avoid the open air marketplace next to the shops in proper buildings in town. The vendors in the open air booths are persistent beyond coersion to the point of physically pulling or herding you in by blocking your egress. Extremely pushy. I felt like a 'mark' the entire time. No 'Irie' vibe here!

Look out for persons who come up to you with stories. There are professional con-men, some try this line 'I remember you, don't you remember me?'. The result is they are looking for money, sympathy and your weakness. BEWARE!!!
