It is alot cheaper to get around Jamaica if you get to know some of the locals. Alot of the locals keep minibuses and will take you and some friends wherever you want to go for a reasonable price.
We used a guy called Glen who took us to the Glistening Waters at the Blue Lagoon for only 5 US Dollars and he also took 12 of us to Margaritaville for only 10 US Dollars per person.
This is an 1 hour long journey to Margaritaville so it is well worth it. He even stopped off at a shop so we could buy some Red Stripes for our journey and get drunk ready to go clubbing.

We flew direct to Kingston from London’s Gatwick Airport with Virgin Atlantic, and returned with the same airline from Montego Bay. We didn’t experience any problems with our flights, and for travellers from the UK this seems a good option, especially as they allow you to fly into one end of the island and return from the other at no extra cost.

Kingston Airport is small and from our brief time there seemed to have fewer facilities than Montego Bay. If duty free shopping is important to you (and with rum this cheap it probably should be!) I suggest you use the latter for your return flight. Montego Bay also seemed a bit better organised – queues were long but well-managed, whereas immigration at Kingston was disordered and painfully slow.

On the other hand, the scenery in the immediate vicinity of Kingston is great, and we had some wonderful views of the Blue Mountains and of the coastline as we came into land. The airport is on a peninsula, so be prepared to feel as if you’re coming down in the sea ;)

    Hiring a private guide

  • I can't stress enough that you should get out of the all inclusive for at least a day and see some of the surrounding countryside. You can do this with a hotel/package arranged tour but I much prefer going out with a private guide.

We hired Carolyn Barrett of Barrett Adventures to take us on a full day trip to Appleton, Milk River and Alligator Hole and then another 1/2 day to Mayfield Falls. The cost is actually a little less per person than the large hotel/package tours and you aren't on anyone else's schedule.

When I first inquired about her services, Carolyn emailed me a list of prepackaged tours but worked with me to combine a couple of the shorter tours to make a full day. She also arranges for full week tours around the island, visit the website for more information.

We have always flown into the airport at Montego Bay, it's the closest airport to the resort areas of Ocho Rios (2 hours), Negril (1 1/4 hours) and Montego Bay (10-20 minutes).

Getting through customs isn't too bad although it can be a bit of a wait if you arrive at a popular time. The luggage has always arrived before we've gotten through and is off the carousel.

We use package operators which include transfer to the resort, if you travel with Apple, FunJet, Air Jamaica Vacations, etc., you will want to look for someone with a sign from the company or wade through all the taxi drivers and find the numbered stands which have the package companies listed.

Many of the resorts, if you book directly with them, have storefronts at the airport where you go to find out how to transfer to the resort. I saw one for Couples, Sandals, Ritz Carlton and several others.

If you are renting a car, the car rental agencies are in the terminal. I saw an ATM but it was not affiliated with a bank. We have not used Jamaican money on any of our trips, USD are widely accepted.

When you are flying back home, there are several liquor stores and souvenir shops. Prices on souvenirs were higher than what you would find at the markets but not excessive. I think liquor is just a bit more expensive if you don't want to lug it to the airport.

    Package deals to Jamaica

  • I've found that the best deals for Jamaica (and most beach destinations) from Chicago and many other US cities is to book a package that includes airfare, hotels and transfers to and from the airport.

The two companies from Chicago that used to do it the best are Apple Vacations and FunJet but recently I haven't found the best deals through them, probably because we were not going at the same time as their charter flights. I have used both several times with no problems.

Other options are Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz and Air Jamaica vacations, all of which have package deals. I used Expedia in 2008 to book our Jamaica trip.

Downsides to using package tours? No major ones but you may have to wait at the airport until they have rounded everyone up delaying your beach vacation for a bit. And they seem to take you to the airpot awfully early but if you want to pay a few extra $$$ you can just tell them that you're arranging for your own transfer.

Sometimes you will get on a charter flight and the planes are not the most comfortable. Air Jamaica is a good airline to fly on and the only direct flight I could find but it was also the most expensive.

Presently, the road to Negril is being rebuilt to straighten out many of the curves and shorten travel times. It will become a better route, but be aware that the construction can cause delays right now. Many travelers on a tight schedule opt to take an intra-island flight from Montego Bay. The 17-minute flight goes into Negril airport, where taxis are available tTaxis are the most popular method of transportation for travelers. They can be found at any hotel, the airports, and most shopping areas. Travelers should be careful to use only licensed taxis; these have a red license plate that indicates the taxi is a Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV). If you need to call a taxi, contact the official carrier: Taxi rates vary, but are figured by car, not by passenger. Fares average about US $5-7 for 10 miles. If you accept a driver’s offer of his services as a tour guide, be sure to agree on a price before the vehicle is put into gear. o take you to any resort.

Use a driver and preferrably one your hotel hires for its clients. Driving here is crazy. I have a picture of a typical Jamaican street. It is amazing. Hired cars are reasonable, and you get a private guide. Share a car for more economy with fellow guests. Public busses are not good.

We arrived at Montego Bay airport and were taken by cab to Negril. Our hotel arranged the transport. NY cabbies have nothing on Jamaican cabbies. Try not to look forward and just HANG ON!
To get around in Negril, we opted to rent a moped. This worked out very well for us!

From Negril to Mo Bay it's a sometimes hairraising ride, taking up to 90 minutes. Why not do the trip from the air, in 15-20 instead?

From Negril aerodrome, TimAir offers flights for about $70 per person in it's little 4 seaters. So it's like sitting in a very small car with wings. Great friendly pilot, plenty of opportunity to take pics from the air. Feels safe and reasonably comfortable for a short trip. No need to go through customs at the other end, simply take a ride into the town or head to Doctors Cave beach for some sunning and rumming!

There are several flights daily to Montego Bay on several airlines.
We flew on American, my daughter came in on ATA, and my son flew on Air Jamaica.
There are no doubt other airlines that do this also.
