Flight & airports

by toonsarah

We flew direct to Kingston from London’s Gatwick Airport with Virgin Atlantic, and returned with the same airline from Montego Bay. We didn’t experience any problems with our flights, and for travellers from the UK this seems a good option, especially as they allow you to fly into one end of the island and return from the other at no extra cost.Kingston Airport is small and from our brief time there seemed to have fewer facilities than Montego Bay. If duty free shopping is important to you (and with rum this cheap it probably should be!) I suggest you use the latter for your return flight. Montego Bay also seemed a bit better organised – queues were long but well-managed, whereas immigration at Kingston was disordered and painfully slow.On the other hand, the scenery in the immediate vicinity of Kingston is great, and we had some wonderful views of the Blue Mountains and of the coastline...

Package deals to Jamaica

by Dabs

I've found that the best deals for Jamaica (and most beach destinations) from Chicago and many other US cities is to book a package that includes airfare, hotels and transfers to and from the airport. The two companies from Chicago that used to do it the best are Apple Vacations and FunJet but recently I haven't found the best deals through them, probably because we were not going at the same time as their charter flights. I have used both several times with no problems. Other options are Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz and Air Jamaica vacations, all of which have package deals. I used Expedia in 2008 to book our Jamaica trip.Downsides to using package tours? No major ones but you may have to wait at the airport until they have rounded everyone up delaying your beach vacation for a bit. And they seem to take you to the airpot awfully early but if you want to pay a few extra $$$ you can just...

Phillip Graham-Jamaica Tour Guide Extraordinaire

by sdicksteina

We went to Mayfield Falls with Phillip Graham, who is an excellent guide with reasonable prices (I am a shopper and he was the best deal I could find). In addition to driving us safely to Mayfield Falls in his van, he shared with us some of the history of the country and areas we passed through. He stopped several times and cut fresh sugar cane & oranges, for us to taste as well as showing us the akee fruit (which needs to be cooked). He even took us to a store where we got excellant deals on coffee, T-shirts, and rum that were better than we could negotiate on our own.I was surprised when my phone rang a couple of days after we got home--IT WAS PHILLIP calling to see if we got home OK! How can you beat service like that? Please note: We aren't associated with Phillip in any way except for highly satisfied customers and now friends. Phillip provide tours to a number of places in Jamaica...

Kingston

by iam1wthee

This has to be the worst airport ever. The immigration line is extremely long and slow. To top it off there is no air conditioning. People were fainting due to the heat. Make sure you bring a portable fan. By the time you go to get your bags they have already been taken off of the conveyor belt and they do not put the bags from the people from a particular plane in the same place. I spent 2 hours just looking for my bags. Next time I will cram everything in my carry on bags. The lines in customs are so askew and the agents have a slight attitude. The heat just makes tempers flare.

Renting a Car& Driving To Kingston - Don't do it!

by cricketdog

During my first trip to Jamaica in 1991, my mom and I wanted to rent a car and drive into Kingston to see the Bob Marley museum. The hotel employees quickly warned against the idea and I had a hard time understanding why. Looking back, they did us a great favor. The road from Ocho Rios into Kingston is often jammed with broken down trucks and experiences wash-outs from the rain on a regular basis. Further, the roads are narrow and very dangerous. To top it off, there are few signs and fewer maps to guide you on your way. And... once you're into Kingston, the real fun begins. Ten years after my first trip to the island, I ended up marrying a Jamaican and have since made that trip into Kingston more times than I care to count. Each time, I dread it even more. Unless you have a burning need to head to the capital city, I highly recommend against the idea. If you must, the safest way is to...

Seeing Jamaica

by Mr&MrsWright

Hi, I am 52 and my wife and I have traveled for many years. The last 3 years have been to Jamaica. I would encourage you to get off the vacation resorts during part of your stay and see the country. It and the people are absolutely wonderful. Saying this I have to tell you I dislike the pre arranged tours that are offered around Jamaica. They are expensive, you go to a pre arranged site for a specific time period then back to the resort and that is that. Not my idea of seeing the country or people. Another alternative is the Juta Taxi Bus service. We have used this service on all 3 of our visits and have been extremely pleased and have had the good fortune to find one operator who went above and beyond. His name is Parris and it didn't take us long to see that this gentleman was honourably proud of his country and the service he performs. Parris has given us a wealth of information on...

not good-bus

by iam1wthee

The transportation system in Jamaica is terrible. The buses are so slooow. There are minivans or buses that can take you around. However, they pack up those things so tight. Make sure the hotel or resort you stay at has transportation to take you too and pick you up or wait for you when you decide to go off the beaten path.

Kenneth Tours offers the most reliable and comfortable transportation service in Jamaica. I met Kenneth by chance and have chosen him for all my transportation needs in Jamaica for every trip since. He has both car and van/bus service that is comfortable, clean and air conditioned. He will travel to and from MBJ and hotels as well as to other destinations on the island (even country trips). He is a safe, experienced, professional driver and licensed with JTAL. His fees are negotionable and always reasonable. If he is unavailable, he will recommend a driver for you. Contact Kenneth 1-876-330-6446 or 1-876-310-8743.

Negril to Mo Bay FAST!

by KingSeany

From Negril to Mo Bay it's a sometimes hairraising ride, taking up to 90 minutes. Why not do the trip from the air, in 15-20 instead? From Negril aerodrome, TimAir offers flights for about $70 per person in it's little 4 seaters. So it's like sitting in a very small car with wings. Great friendly pilot, plenty of opportunity to take pics from the air. Feels safe and reasonably comfortable for a short trip. No need to go through customs at the other end, simply take a ride into the town or head to Doctors Cave beach for some sunning and rumming!
