Coach Trips

by Raslady

I would advise everyone to travel to tourist attractions with organised coach parties.I would have no hesitation hiring a vehicle to drive about the local area where you are staying, but to go further afield it really is sensible to go with the professionals.A good example of this is the day we went to Kingston via the Blue Mountains. We came to a road blocked by debris, rocks, furniture, etc. the evening before a youth had been shot by the police and the locals were understandably very vexed, had we been in our own vehicle it would have been quite a scary moment, and we would have had no option but to try and retrace our journey back to the main road. The coach driver luckily had some knowledge of the area and found an alternative route. The other thing you have to remember is the "roads" are often no more than dirt roads covered in potholes, and it's really slow going in a car and the...

Intl. Air Link

by american_tourister

It's an easy choice. 4 hours on a bus along a highway of death and dismemberment or 200 bucks for a 30 minute plane ride to/from Montego bay to Boscobel (Ocho Rios). We chose the plane. The hotel made all the arrangements and the airline took care of the rest. They picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel, took our bags, and just made it easy. I highly recommend this service especially if you are traveling with small ones.Plus the view is just incredible!

Plane: We chose to fly in to...

Plane: We chose to fly in to Jamaica from New York. You can also sail in by cruiseship. Taxi: For us, since we were in an all inclusive, the times we ventured out of the resort we chose to take a taxi. If you stay in a hotel, you may wish to rent a car to explore the other parts of the island.

Driving difficulties

by planxty

Driving in Jamaica is an experience, to say the least. The roads themselves, especially outside Kingston, are in poor repair, and the standard of driving is poor. If you don’t believe me, try negotiating the Halfway Tree junction in New Kingston in the rush hour! The general principle on the road seems to be “might is right” and lorry drivers will assert this to the full.A Jamaican colleague of mine, who is not a particularly bad driver, but commutes a fair distance into Montego Bay to work, told me that he averages one minor collision a month. There is a road sign on the way from Montego Bay airport into the town which gives the number of road fatalities in previous years, and it makes for sobering reading.Driving outside the major centres at night is not recommended, due to the poor condition of the roads and the lack of street lighting. There is one good section of toll road outside...

Montego Bay airport

by Dabs

We have always flown into the airport at Montego Bay, it's the closest airport to the resort areas of Ocho Rios (2 hours), Negril (1 1/4 hours) and Montego Bay (10-20 minutes).Getting through customs isn't too bad although it can be a bit of a wait if you arrive at a popular time. The luggage has always arrived before we've gotten through and is off the carousel. We use package operators which include transfer to the resort, if you travel with Apple, FunJet, Air Jamaica Vacations, etc., you will want to look for someone with a sign from the company or wade through all the taxi drivers and find the numbered stands which have the package companies listed. Many of the resorts, if you book directly with them, have storefronts at the airport where you go to find out how to transfer to the resort. I saw one for Couples, Sandals, Ritz Carlton and several others. If you are renting a car, the car...

Travel around

by Niablue

The best way to get there is with an airplane although I wanted very much to try to travel with a ship but don't worry you will have of chances to cruise around the island with one of this little or big ships and enjoy sea life. I used the services of British Airways who fly to Kingston and Montego Bay and my flighs were really pleasant. I didn't see much buses there only those for litlle children going to shcool. But they have lots of taxies who can take you everywhere you want. If you are a big group you can rent a little bus with a driver but you must know that you must negotiate with the driver the price for you travel to the place you want to visit so you will have no surprises when the time you must pay the bill comes.

Self Drive

Rent a car at the airport and drive.Just be sure to take before and after shots of the car. They tried to say that we had damaged our car while we were driving it. NotLuckily we had photos to prove otherwise.

Keep off the roads!

by coopergirl2003

The rep at our hotel warned us about the local driving standards...ie, I don't think there are any! We only went on organised excursions and were thankful that we were not driving! One traffic jam was miles long because of a lorry falling onto a range rover type thing and the police didn't appear to have any authority over the motorists...if you think the Jamaicans are a chilled out race, they are....until it comes to driving. I have never seen such dangerous driving before!!

Vans, cars, tours buses

by WILDEFLOWER

If your use to driving the left side of the road go for it LOL! Settle on price with taxi driver before stepping foot into car, van etc.this includes for tours. Your hotel can usually give you information on safe drivers. But I would be cautious even with the police! Sorry everyone seemed a little jumpy over there to me. We passed by a policeman in Negril tipping a rum bottle in Negril in Uniform. That was a little scary! Some of the businesses seem to only be around 6 months to a year at a time at the most. Others are ok.

Hiring a private guide

by Dabs

I can't stress enough that you should get out of the all inclusive for at least a day and see some of the surrounding countryside. You can do this with a hotel/package arranged tour but I much prefer going out with a private guide. We hired Carolyn Barrett of Barrett Adventures to take us on a full day trip to Appleton, Milk River and Alligator Hole and then another 1/2 day to Mayfield Falls. The cost is actually a little less per person than the large hotel/package tours and you aren't on anyone else's schedule. When I first inquired about her services, Carolyn emailed me a list of prepackaged tours but worked with me to combine a couple of the shorter tours to make a full day. She also arranges for full week tours around the island, visit the website for more information.
