Jamaica Bus

by ultchuk

There's all kind of local transport available in Jamaica. These types of busses on the photo where not seen very often anymore at the time I was there. Most of them were the mini-busses. It was never sure if you would reach your final destination. They were privately owned and I can remember that sometimes they would see at the other side of the street more people waiting, would let all the passenger step out (in the hot sun) to get a full bus back. The passengers were advised to take the next bus. There was a song from Metro when i was there 'evaluating the great transport system in Jamaica". I will see if I can find the text somewhere.

17 min flight or taxi

by venteeocho

Presently, the road to Negril is being rebuilt to straighten out many of the curves and shorten travel times. It will become a better route, but be aware that the construction can cause delays right now. Many travelers on a tight schedule opt to take an intra-island flight from Montego Bay. The 17-minute flight goes into Negril airport, where taxis are available tTaxis are the most popular method of transportation for travelers. They can be found at any hotel, the airports, and most shopping areas. Travelers should be careful to use only licensed taxis; these have a red license plate that indicates the taxi is a Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV). If you need to call a taxi, contact the official carrier: Taxi rates vary, but are figured by car, not by passenger. Fares average about US $5-7 for 10 miles. If you accept a driver’s offer of his services as a tour guide, be sure to agree on a...

Jaimaica Tours

by Robinski9

Jamaica Tours ground travel came with a package I bought that was all inclusive. When we left the resort we shelled out $20 extra for tips and a couple of surcharges. Other than that, our hands didnt' touch the dirty money. When you arrive at the airport Jamaica Tours comes looking for you. There's this tiny little desk were it doesn't appear they could organize anything but they've got information on everybody there, where they're going and when they need to get you there. They then lead you out to the parking lot to wait for the next bus and try to sell you Ganja. :) Go figure.

Train from Kingston

by DonMack

For a different and fun way to see parts of Jamacia otherwise inaccessable take the train from Kingston to Montigo Bay. Leaves early in the AM so pack lunch and lots of film. Train passes thru the spectacular "cockpit" country and is a great and safe way to meet Jamacians doing everyday things away from tourist centers. I was invited to ride on the switch engine at the change over point, great fun!

Be forewarned that Jamaicans drive on the left side of the road-and they drive like maniacs. I would not recommendLocal buses except to the budget-minded or well-seasoned traveler, though they do offer a colorful, if crowded, glimpse of Jamaican life for the adventurous. Escorted half-and full-day tours, bicycles, rental cars and taxis are enjoyable ways of getting around. You can book at any resort. The roads along the winding north coast and in the mountain offer beautiful vistas, but driving them can be a bit harrowing because of the blind curves and potholes.Mind you it took us 2 hours to get to o resort from the airport 60 miles away. Harrowing at very least. The people we meet who came in the night before same trip 5 hours ! It had rained and roads washed out.

You do not want to drive here, believe it.

Use a driver and preferrably one your hotel hires for its clients. Driving here is crazy. I have a picture of a typical Jamaican street. It is amazing. Hired cars are reasonable, and you get a private guide. Share a car for more economy with fellow guests. Public busses are not good.

We arrived at Montego Bay...

by diver-x

We arrived at Montego Bay airport and were taken by cab to Negril. Our hotel arranged the transport. NY cabbies have nothing on Jamaican cabbies. Try not to look forward and just HANG ON!To get around in Negril, we opted to rent a moped. This worked out very well for us!

Moving Around Town

Currency: Jamaican dollar ( jay) Relative Costs: cheap meal: US$2-5 restaurant meal: US$10-20 cheap room: US$15-25 hotel room: $US30-60Jamaica is relatively inexpensive compared to other Caribbean islands, though how much you spend depends largely on the style in which you travel. Budget travelers will need around US$20-30 per day, while those staying in comfortable hotels and eating at tourist restaurants will need at least US$75 per day - add another US$50 per day if you hire a car. Rates at all-inclusive resorts begin at $175. During October through December (low season) many air/hotel packages can be made with very low cost with travel suppliers like 'Apple Vacations' based here in the USA.

Getting There and Away

by frqtflyr

Beaches & Sun: Jamaica is a year-round destination thanks to its tropical maritime climate. Seasons are virtually non-existent and daytime maximum temperatures along the coast hover constantly around 80-86°F. Even up in the Blue Mountains temperatures are only just under 68°F for most of the year. If you plan on spending time on the east coast or in the Blue Mountains, you may wish to take account of the so-called rainy season, which extends from May to November with two peaks: May/June and October/November. The peak tourist season runs from mid-December to mid-April, with Christmas and Easter the busiest weeks. During this period the resort areas of the island are flooded with foreign tourists and hotel prices are highest. You can save wads of money (40% or more at some hotels) by visiting during the less-crowded LOW season which lasts from September thru November.

Mini Bus

by suraphona

Minivans travel the same routes as cabs, but for far less money - however, they are most often used for trips to the surrounding areas, rather than just in and around Town. Timetables and the number of passengers squeezed into the vans often depend on the whims or needs of the driver. There is also a small aerodome where shuttle planes can be booked that will take you to airports in the main tourist towns (Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Port Antonio, Kingston.)
