There are 2 airports to choose from

by rachel_sun

There are 2 airports, Donald Sangster and Norman Manley and several airlines serve the island,Air Jamaica, and flights from europe and north america. You need a return ticket to get into the country.Taxis are good, but ask a price before you get in.Public transport is overcrowded and services irregular and drivers are mad.The railway is out of service at the moment.Hiring a car, jeep is a good choice, but do be careful of the crazy drivers, and remember your passport.

We flew Jamaica Air non-stop from Los Angeles to Montego Bay, Jamiaca. This was one of the most uncomfortable flights I have ever been on. The seats have no padding, and are crammed against the seat in front of you. Only the fact that you are going to Jamaica, and that they give you free beer and champagne, make the trip bearable.Once in Montego Bay, we cought the shuttle bus to our Hotel in Negril, about an hour and a half of the scarriest drive I have ever taken. I know it sounds like a cliche, but they really are the worst drivers I have ever seen. But again, it was all worth it once we arrived at the Resort. We just walked up and down the increadible beach to get wheere we wanted to go, which admittedly wasn't very far.

It takes a lot to get to Jamaica. First thing you got to do, and probably the best way to get there is by plane. My trip starts on June 20 where I take a plane, Vanguard Airlines to Atlanta from Kansas City. After I get there, I board a flight to Montego Bay Jamaica.

Fly Air Jamaica.. usually the least expensive and the best service. The pilots usually have the best landings.Rent a car... but it is expensive and you must drive on the left. You can also talk to some local taxi drivers and work out a deal for them to take you around.

There are international connections into Jamaica. However Air Jamaica is the national airline, you can try the champagne flights now.I dare you to try the public bus system. For the faint of heart please stick to the walking - (I would have suggested the taxi but the driving could do damage to the heart).

Online travel services, such as Expedia and Travelocity are good for getting the best prices to Jamaica. Mainly enter thru Sangster/Montego Bay Airport. The best way to get around in Jamaica is to stick with one person and use a taxi. Do not rent a car unless you've been there a few times (like four or five times). The drivers all drive on the left and they drive very fast. Try and negotiate a flat rate with taxi drivers and get as much information as possible about the island.I think sometimes it's best to talk to the visitors or returning residents. They can suggest people they've used and trusted. Prepare to pay about $80US for a two hour ride from the Airport to Ocho Rios.

We flew into Montego Bay then got the transport laid on by the hotel. Oh my God - I thought we'd been kidnapped. The road from Mo'bay to Negril is horrific. There are no straight bits, no street lights, come to think of it no tarmac and the drivers are nutters!! We came across a landslide, a dead cow and a major accident in the hour and a half transfer. What a relief when we got to the hotel. Apparently this road has been getting built for years and its an ongoing argument over whos paying for it.On our way back, I dreaded the thought of that bloody road so we asked about and there is a little airstrip in Negril that does transfers to Mo'bay airport. Its about gbp60 each and takes 20mins but the views are amazing. Its a tiny plane so dont do it if you hate flying. Your hotel will book it for you. Cant remember the airlines name - sorry.

The best way to get to Jamaica is by air - American Airlines as daily flights as does, of course, Air Jamaica. I suppose you could get to Jamaica on a cruise ship but then there's so much you would never see.If you've never driven in 3rd world country then I wouldn't recommend driving. Hire a taxi or take the bus but for me the only way to get around Jamaica is by driving. The roads are narrow, twisting, and dangerous but I love it! Remember to drive on the left!

We flew AirJamaica from Phila, and the flight going to Jamaica was not very good...The seats were very cramped and it just made for an uncomfortable flight, however, leaving Jamaica we had a great flight...Let me warn you! The ride from the Montego Bay airport to Ocho Rios was like something out of a Adventure movie....The speed limits are incredible here! :) But it was a pleasure riding through the towns, watching the locals..

Air Jamaica fly from most main US airports and are reliable and the service is good. They also fly from London as do British Airways.American Airlines also fly direct from New York and Miami. From Europe you can find cheap flights on several charter flights, and a good place to find these is on teletext.Getting around in Jamaica is not for the faint hearted. Minibus drivers are a law unto themselves, which makes driving in them as a passenger exciting to say the least. Renting a car can be expensive, but is the best way to see the island properly. They drive on the left hand side of the road in Jamaica (where possible) and despite being a laid back island, Jamaican's seem to be in a mad rush to get anywhere when behind the steering wheel so be careful.
