You'll get along a lot more easily in Martinique if you are proficient in the French language. Even if you sound clumsy speaking it, people definitely appreciate the effort you have made to learn about their culture!

Try to get off the beaten track, and visit places that are not 'touristy'. Although a village, cafe or shop may look uninviting to the average tourist, your custom will be welcomed, and you will usually find people and staff very helpful.

Beside that 'coutume' of wearing their 'coiffure' differently according to their status as a woman, there are many nice uses in this country. The creole language and the cuisine are also interesting. If you show poeple that you are not from France they will be showing a great sense of hospitality.

It is important to remember that it is impolite to wear swimwear around the island except on or near the beaches. It is similarly inappropriate for women to wear shorts when shopping.
